For us, real success is the moment when a client is presented with a design solution and says, “We did it.”
About us
RATIO Architecture Interior Design + Planning. We bring distinctive thinking, rigorous creativity and a progressive approach to every project. As one of the oldest architecture firms in the country, we have helped to shape the architectural landscape of Western Canada. A ratio expresses proportion, balance and relationship. Our name is grounded in the importance of relations and relationships in our work. Between a building and it’s environment. Between citizens and structures. Between our firm and our clients. We begin every project by asking ourselves and our clients a critical question: What will it take for this project to realize its full potential? What makes our approach unique is the full integration of the three disciplines. We always think about the larger perspective, stepping back to ask the right questions and analyze design problems from every angle. Our cross-discipline team considers the project context, intended function and the inevitable built form cohesively. This is how we help our clients look beyond conventional thinking to create inspiring, innovative and sustainable spaces. In 1954, our firm was established in Vancouver, BC as Toby & Russell Architects, and then, known as TRB Architecture. Working collaboratively with our clients, we’ve created iconic buildings, such as Vancouver’s Sinclair Centre, Holy Name Church and the bustling Pacific Highway Border Crossing, as well as many unsung but equally important structures like reservoirs, generating stations, community centres and credit unions. RATIO: A young firm with a great history. We'd love to talk about your project. Give Christopher Pollard a call at 604.682.6881.

Regional materials and sustainable principles were part of our clients' vision for their flagship branch, Salmon Arm Savings and Credit Union (SASCU). Inspired by the natural and manmade characteristics of the site’s surroundings, the long angular green roof reaches up to the sky. The predominant use of wood offsets the building’s carbon footprint while superior energy performance is achieved with the introduction of “earth tubes”. Built out of respect for the land, the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre acts as both the literal and figurative doorway to the forest. The project epitomises responsible land stewardship, a traditional value held by First Nations including the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations, and contributes to Whistler’s reputation as an innovator in environmentally sustainable development. How to design a school that the community will rally around, and one with the flexibility to evolve in the future? Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences (PCU-WHS) is a not-for-profit educational and research institution for workplace safety, health promotion, disability leadership studies and more. They have been recognized worldwide for their work with the United Nations and other international bodies. Ratio was chosen by PCU-WHS to develop a site master plan and to design the first building based on a mutual devotion to this outstanding cause. A bold design approach connects the past, present and future at this National Historic Site. Our work at the BRITANNIA MINE MUSEUM on the west coast of BC focused on two key challenges: creating a clear visual identity that unifies the entire facility, and respecting the site’s heritage through adaptive reuse of the existing structure. Today, the museum is a British Columbia icon. Both the museum and the copper-clad Beaty Lundin Visitor Centre Ratio designed have won numerous architectural awards. Visitors to the museum have more than doubled since the completion of the project. Personal relationships form the foundation for this client’s business model so we integrated spaces to inspire comfortable and personal one-on-one discussions. As a brand with multiple divisions, colour is utilized strategically to reinforce corporate identity. Overall, the new branch design provided a bright, optimistic environment. https://lnkd.in/g4bhzZve #credituniondesign #branchdesign #interiordesign
