This past weekend was #WorldOceanDay. Global Conservation is committed to direct action for our #oceans, #climate, and #communities. ⬇ Here is some #goodnews about our impact on oceans over the past 10 years through enhanced support of #MarineProtectedAreas. (MPA’s) Over the past ten years, we've: - Protected over 1,000 Species - 100s of Poacher Arrests, Fines, and Confiscations - Deployed 12 Marine Monitor (M2) Radar Surveillance Systems - Supported Over 7,000,000 hectares of #MarineProtectedAreas - Patrolled over 60,000 miles of Marine Protected Areas We want other organizations to see this success, so we recently published a new Marine Protection Handbook for MPA Managers authored by Dr. Lida Teneva, focusing on effective protection using marine radars and rapid response teams to combat illegal fishing and wildlife poaching. Acting Deputy Secretary, Office of Water Programs at Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection
Kittatinny Ridge Among 5 Sentinel Landscapes Selected to Address Climate Change Impacts and Strengthen Military Readiness https://lnkd.in/eD62ZKid “In the Lenape language, Kittatinny means “Big Mountain,” which describes the geography of Kittatinny Ridge Sentinel Landscape well. Located in eastern Pennsylvania’s Appalachian Mountains, it encompasses forested ridges and fertile valleys that provide clean water, sequester vast amounts of carbon, and serve as a crucial corridor for rare wildlife and songbird migration. The landscape is anchored by Fort Indiantown Gap, the busiest National Guard training center, the Army’s second busiest heliport, and one of only three specialized Army National Guard aviation facilities. With the primary mission of preserving military mission readiness, operations, testing and training capabilities, KRSL partners are focused on increasing coordinated and holistic land conservation, natural resource protection, and stewardship initiatives; supporting working lands productivity and economic development; and improving nature-based recreational resources and access to sustain small-town economies.” #agriculture #conservation #wildlife #military #cleanwater #chesapeakebay #pennsylvania #partnerships

Did you know that Jersey's seabed belongs to the public and that you can help us protect it? 🌊 Jersey’s remarkable marine spatial plan aims to create protected areas, prioritising the health of marine habitats, while at the same time allowing low-impact fishing, such as potting, hook and line, netting, hand-diving and other human activities to operate sustainably - revitalising the health of Jersey’s waters for generations to come. Time is running out to support the Jersey Marine Spatial Plan. ⏰ Dive into the details and help us protect Jersey’s marine life here 👉 https://ow.ly/CCF450QrIvf #Jersey #MarineSpatialPlan #OceanConservation #OceanProtection #OceanAction

Despite their designation, many Marine Protected Areas remain vulnerable to the devastating effects of bottom trawling. This practice not only disrupts fragile marine species but directly harms entire ecosystems. 🚢 Trawlers regularly breach the boundaries of MPAs, leaving destruction in their wake. 🎣 Over 90% of discarded fish in EU waters result from bottom trawling, including accidental catches like turtles, sharks, and marine mammals. 🛂 MPAs are hard to manage and police, making real change a challenge. Paper parks won't save our seas. It’s time to end bottom trawling in Marine Protected Areas. Your voice can drive change. Sign the appeal below to demand action and help us ensure that protection truly means protected. Let’s work together for the ocean, for our planet, and for future generations. Please urge the EU Commission to Ban Destructive Fishing in Protected Waters: https://lnkd.in/eeTtQHj2 Oceana in Europe North Sails #BanBottomTrawling #LookDeeper #WorldOceansDay

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) and the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration have recently unveiled a substantial $144 million in grants for natural infrastructure projects in coastal regions across the United States. These projects aim to enhance the resilience of coastal communities and improve habitats for fish and wildlife. jeff trandahl, the executive director and CEO of NFWF, emphasized the significance of these grants in advancing nature-based solutions crucial for increasing resilience in vulnerable communities. The National Coastal Resilience Fund (NCRF), through this collaboration, aims to promote sustainable designs, plans, and practices integrating natural features into coastal resilience strategies, fostering adaptation and resilience to storms, floods, and other coastal hazards. The grants were made possible through a collaborative effort involving NFWF, NOAA, the United States Department of Defense, Shell USA Inc, TransRe, Salesforce, and Oxy, showcasing a multi-stakeholder approach towards supporting and implementing these critical projects.
