"What is the potential for Canadian Philanthropy to play a catalytic role in shaping AI for the benefit for all?" Yesterday, we started the date with a special-invite breakfast with 45 exceptional philanthropy and nonprofit leaders exploring this question before the inaugural #ImpactAI conference at MaRS Discovery District. We're grateful to Mark Abbott, from Tech Stewardship and Josee Thibault, and Krista Jones from MaRS Discovery District for creating this space for dialogue with colleagues from Imagine Canada, Ontario Trillium Foundation, The Dais at Toronto Metropolitan University, DMZ, Reimagine LABS and many others on how philanthropy needs to fund the collective tissue that ensures our communities are equitably prosperity from advancements in technology and that technology advancements are considering our communities so that our solutions work for all. We were inspired by Katherine (Kathy) Hay ICD.D and Lisa Zarzeczny's conversation about the important role start-ups can play in youth mental health later in the day. Their commitment? To uphold the highest standards of data privacy and ethical technology use while creating disruptive solutions that empower young people and support their mental well-being. When Black entrepreneurs succeed, Canada succeeds. It was an absolute honour to host our "Elevate & Celebrate Black Excellence" event yesterday, in commemoration of #BlackHistoryMonth2024. The event brought together a remarkable lineup of speakers, each offering invaluable perspectives and insights. Among them were Alfred Burgesson, Founder & CEO of Tribe Network, Muna M., Founder of Eight50 Coffee, Cynthia Dorrington, CPA, CMA, President & CEO of Vale and Associates Human Resource Management and Consulting Inc., and Catherine Leteinturier Guissé, Business Center Manager at BDC. These strong entrepreneurs shared their personal stories, perspectives, and the work they do to actively support and uplift their communities and other Black entrepreneurs. We were also joined by Liban Abokor, Founder and Managing Director of Reimagine LABS & Co-Founder of Foundation for Black Communities , Louis-Edgar Jean-François, CPA, Chairman & CEO of Groupe 3737, Matthew James Martel, CEO of Black Business Initiative, and Tiffany Callender, Co-founder & CEO of FACE Coalition. Their insights, representing prominent Black business associations, highlighted ongoing efforts to support Black entrepreneurs in Canada, identified critical gaps in our systems and underscored the need to protect the investments already made to ensure all Black entrepreneurs are set up for success. Thank you to MP Arielle Kayabaga, Chair of the Liberal Black Caucus, Minister of of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities Kamal Khera, and Minister of Small Business Rechie Valdez for joining us to highlight the progress made by the Government of Canada in promoting inclusive entrepreneurship, underline their commitment to supporting Black entrepreneurs and discuss key initiatives to address the challenges and systemic barriers they face. Witnessed some groundbreaking ideas tackling major challenges - from bridging the STEM learning gap to revolutionizing small business supply chains, promoting eco-friendly fashion, and enhancing university tutoring programs. As a founder of an early stage start up, Reimagine LABS , I know firsthand the thrill and nerves of sharing your vision with the world.
