Had a great trip down to The Seattle Museum of Flight earlier this summer to check out their GRUNDFOS Distributed Pumping System! This system was retrofit so they were able to monitor pumping performance before & after, which resulted in an incredible 74% savings in pump energy. Even more savings were seen in chiller energy usage thanks to an optimized delta-T in the hydronic system. The distributed pumps vary their speed automatically based on demand at each coil or zone, and the primary pumps vary to match delta-T of the secondary loop. Overall system head is drastically reduced, and the system is self-balancing. Simple, yet impressive! Would be great to see more commercial buildings going this way.
