We had a spectacular SPARK Innovation Forum in Nairobi last week to explore ways innovators can partner with national healthcare agencies to deliver better patient outcomes and improve care delivery efficiency. With The Global Fund, World Health Organization and several key stakeholders at the table, we got a good sense of the partnership roadmap and alignment areas for Sproxil. It is encouraging to see new opportunities open up to support public and private sector collaboration, focused on nimble organizations with proven track records. Big thanks to the Salient Advisory team for coordinating a great event, and to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other sponsors for enabling thoughtful conversations and budding partnerships.

What an honor to host an African HealthTech Innovation Cocktail in New York during #UNGA79, on behalf of Investing in Innovation (i3). i3 is a pan-African initiative focused on scaling data-driven innovation across the continent. Visionary leaders from global health institutions and government, including Nigeria’s Minister of State for Health and the ED/CEO of Nigeria’s NPHCDA, met with leading African healthtech innovators such as Chefaa, Figorr, Healthtracka , Kapsule, Kasha Global, Inc., Maisha Meds, Wellahealth, and more. In just two years, i3 has become the most active funder of healthtech in Africa, supporting 60 companies with a focus on supply chain innovations. Each company received $50K in grant capital and over 450 introductions were made to global healthcare organizations, resulting in them securing 120+ contracts, MOUs, and partnerships valued at over $11M USD. Stay tuned for the upcoming launch of the next phase of i3, where we aim to make an even greater impact! Salient recently co-hosted a webinar on Online Pharmacy Regulations with 24 African pharmacy regulators, and experts from International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) and National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. Reflecting on experiences from the US & Europe, participants discussed 5 key areas for consideration in the development of online pharmacy regulations across Africa: 1) Licensing and registration often attempt to ensure consistent standards for both products & pharmacy services; 2) Consumers being able to identify licensed providers is key: common approaches are through the use of special logos/seals or .pharmacy domains controlled by the regulator; 3) Tools for securely generating, sharing and validating electronic prescriptions are critical; 4) Assurance of product quality for online sales is paramount and 5) Enforcement and regulatory compliance processes are key, both to track unregistered providers and for consumers to report.
