About us
Who We Are: As BC/ Yukon's leading first aid and safety charity, St. John Ambulance BC/Yukon remains committed to our history of caring and saving lives. We’re committed to enabling residents to improve their health, safety and quality of life through training and community service, and live our mission by practicing the values of teamwork, respect, loyalty, and integrity. Some of the organizations we’ve partnered with include BC Hydro, CIBC, BC Ferries, Telus, CN Rail, London Drugs, Sprott Shaw Community College, Mark’s Work Warehouse, McElhanney, and the BC Municipal Safety Association. Our Difference: At St. John Ambulance, we focus all of our efforts to empower our communities to save lives at work, home and play. Through our training and products, our impactful team and history, and our dedicated community charitable services, St. John Ambulance is the safety partner for every resident in British Columbia and the Yukon. What We Do: Building on a 900-year tradition, St. John Ambulance partners with individuals and organizations to provide first aid and CPR training and products. As a self-funded charity, training and product proceeds support our volunteer-based community care programs. In British Columbia and Yukon, we serve our communities through a network of 19 branches and 100+ staff members, where we train over 65,000 students annually through our first aid classes. Our volunteers also provide first aid in their communities to keep people safe at public events, and also improve quality of life through community care programs that help seniors, and provide leadership opportunities for our youth. We are consistently campaigning to raise public awareness of first aid and CPR and strive to have every British Columbian and Yukonian equipped with the skills to care for their own community. Visit sja.ca for first aid & CPR training at any of our branches in BC and Yukon. See supportsja.ca to learn more about how our volunteers make a difference.

Meet Angela and Ellie, a volunteer duo with our Therapy Dog Program 🐕 who make visits to the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and local long-term care homes. Their work of bringing comfort and compassion to those in need is inspiring and is making a real difference. Thanks for everything you do Angela and Ellie! The photo here recognizes their dedication to volunteering, as published in the recent annual report from our friends at Island Health - Vancouver Island Health Authority. Big thanks and shout out to Island Health, not only for the wonderful work they and their volunteers do, but also for putting such a high priority on mental health and well-being. 🐶💚Meet Rolo, a 15-year-old miniature poodle with a heart as big as his ears (well, maybe bigger!). Despite facing deafness and vision loss, Rolo, along with his handler Rachel, is a shining example of the incredible power of therapy dogs. Together, they visit the Salmon Arm Library, brightening days for people of all ages through the Paws 4 Stories program. But Rolo's impact goes beyond cuddles and books! This incredible duo has been volunteering with the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program since 2021, making a real difference in people's lives. One stand out story from Rachel relates that during one session, a senior with dementia came to visit. He hadn't spoken in weeks, but upon seeing Rolo immediately took to him. Some pets and head scratches later, the gentleman opened up to a warm chat and even a song with Rolo! That's the magic of therapy dogs. Here's how YOU can help Rolo and amazing pups like him continue spreading joy: 💚Donate: Every dollar makes a difference!
