Steelcon’s League of Champions jersey recently made a stop at our Progress shop for everyone to sign as part of a pledge to work safely and to support a safer construction industry in Ontario. We also used the event as an opportunity to recognize the contributions our employees make in fostering a culture of health and safety in our workplace, and each employee filled out a Why I Work Safe card that will be posted in the shop to serve as a daily reminder of why it’s so important that everyone goes home safely at the end of each day. Special thanks to our HSE team, Progress team, and everyone involved in planning and executing this important event. Forging a 🅶🆁🅴🅴🅽🅴🆁 Future The transition from iron produced in blast furnaces will require the industry to find a new method to produce sufficient iron to supplement steel scrap. Steel scrap is projected to be an insufficient stand-alone source and direct reduced iron (#DRI) is often proposed as the low-emission option to fill this gap. DRI is the chemical process of modifying or "reducing" iron oxide to metallic iron with hydrogen-rich gases, or pure hydrogen. One important note is that there are 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 in energy demand and emissions produced between methods. Below is my best attempt at summarizing each DRI method and the key resources and emissions required to produce one tonne of steel. Rotary Kiln & Rotary Hearth DRI Emissions: High Energy Source: Coal Energy Required: 30-35 GJs CO2: 1500-2200 kgs Steel Producers: Tata Steel, Jindal Steel & Power Ltd., Shougang Group, Tosyalı Holding, Monnet Ispat & Energy Ltd.
