Leader with a passion for purpose-led initiatives that galvanize and lead to more impactful organizations.
Is visiting northern Manitoba on your bucket list? Last week I travelled to the Pas with two members from the Tech Manitoba team, to attend University College of the North's Linkages Conference. Held at the Kikiwak Inn, Opaskwayak Cree Nation and co-organized by the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, it was two days of insights, laughter, and great food--all under the theme of fostering innovation and collaboration in Northern Manitoba. It was an honour and a pleasure to have our group present on 'Fostering Digital Potential: Connecting Tech, Talent & Opportunities;' and to talk about our northern tech-focused program, MentorLink. This new program, which supports UCN's IT Support Technician students and their IT Readiness North (InTeRN) program for Indigenous women focuses on direct industry learnings from our friends at Exchange Technology Services. These programs support northern workforce sustainability. They allow for students to stay in the north and to be employed in the north. They allow for families to stay together and to have hope for their futures. My thanks to Doug Lauvstad, MBA and his wonderful team at UCN; and to Chuck Davidson for making Linkages possible. To Tara Manych and Randy Manych--thank you for your amazing hospitality, and for sharing one of the most beautiful views, as seen here, from Clear Water Lake. If your strategy, like ours, includes supporting a workforce and tech ecosystem that reflects the diversity of Manitoba's population, I highly recommend visiting areas outside your home base and cultivating new relationships with wonderful people and organizations who share your commitment to what's possible. "Builder's League: Hackathons Changing the World" just concluded it's first ever event! 🥳🥳 Here's some facts about the last 72 hours: - 👷 84 tech professionals, students, project managers, and amazing humans gathered together to build a single, custom app for a great cause in a weekend - 💸 The project was valued as $200k - $250k investment (!!!) into the Truth and Reconciliation social enterprise Community of Big Hearts led by Salena Starling. Thank you Richard Tuck and Paul Card for judging! - 📝 20,155 Lines of code - 🧑💻 376 commits written (that's like 370 rough drafts!) - 🔁 109 Pull Requests were merged - 📸 Two news stations covered it, Global news did an article and TV showing, and CBC Radio had us on the morning show (links below)! - ♻️ It doesn't even end here: many coders have continued to do work on the project, ensuring it's supported and can remain useful to our community And, if you want to get feel for the more qualitative impact, Navkaran Singh Kharoud created a 13 min documentary of the entire hackathon... in 24 hours, truly embodying the hackathon spirit (see the video below!). When I and the Ori.Gatou Creative Solutions Inc. team set out to create Builder's League 5 months ago, we wanted to create a new, meaningful kind of hackathon that creates a lasting impact in the following goals: ✅ Unite the greater tech community for a great cause, and create new lasting connections for all ✅ Anyone of all skill levels can walk away learning something new ✅ Reduce wasted effort: instead of lots of smaller toy projects, have all work as a team in a single open source project ✅ Monumental impact: Donate this project to a great cause and non-profit that wouldn't be able to build an app themselves ✅ Empowering Winnipeg tech to change the world! And I think it's fair to say we not only achieved all these goals, but surpassed them. It still feels surreal what we were able to accomplish in this adventure together, and I couldn't be proud of all of our builders and volunteers. You guys rock! 🤘 A huge thank you to our sponsors RRC Polytech, Tech Manitoba, Manitoba Technology Accelerator, NPower, Social Entrepreneurship Enclave (SEE), North Forge, this would have never been possible without you! Onwards and upwards for the next Builder's League, because we are just starting! There's plenty more to come: more impact to be made, more friendships to blossom, and more code to write. Check out the project as it evolves here: https://lnkd.in/gFFCzESC And check out the open source codebase here: https://lnkd.in/gRdctave Global News article: https://lnkd.in/gUP_39nu CBC Radio session (timestamp: 1:40:31): https://lnkd.in/gDWAgqak Dai Zizhang Jordan Kyle Nobuchika Rosana Kevin Sajjad Al Richard Paul Ryan Tyson Vinicius Jasveer Pasha Kelly Stephanie Jody Sandra Turner James Adam and many more! #BuildersLeague #hackathon
Diogo Iwasaki : Need someone to film for 3 days and turnaround a documentary style video in 24hrs Me: Say less I was kinda feeling down all week last week because I had an interview scheduled that I prepped for but the agency decided last minute not conduct the interview 💀 But I took that as a sign to redirect my focus onto better things and seek out opportuntites myself Last 72 hours been a ride got to learn a lot and experiment with a lot of thing. Builder’s league was a great experience, it’s wonderful to see the community come together to create something amazing. Looking forward to the next one The event also kinda reignited my passion for coding and all things computer science. Maybe i found my niche in both tech and marketing.
