About us
Canada’s literacy divide widens daily because so many people lack adequate literacy support. Bridging the literacy gap is something we can do. Solving systemic literacy challenges is key to advancing social equity and prosperity across our country. Literacy changes everything. United for Literacy is a national literacy charity that was founded in 1899. We believe literacy is a right, and that every place can be a learning place. Our vision is a Canada in which everyone has the literacy skills they need to achieve their goals at school, at work, and in life. Our mission is to provide local literacy support programs that change lives.

On September 8, let’s stand together for literacy! For International Literacy Day, we're delighted to announce a powerful collaboration: Over 25 organizations across Canada have joined forces to suggest a National Literacy Framework as part of a joint federal pre-budget submission. Together, we're proposing robust literacy policies that will ensure all Canadians have essential literacy skills, address systemic barriers, and support well-funded, inclusive literacy programs. We aim to make literacy a key driver of growth, inclusion, and empowerment. Stay tuned as we continue to push for policies that will make literacy accessible to all Canadians in the next few months.
