Primary and Secondary Education

To elevate equity-deserving children and youth potential so they can own their future.

About us

As a Canadian non-profit, our mission is to enable historically marginalized youth to empower themselves as changemakers. We design innovative learning programs that focus on identity, agency and belonging development. Our goal is for youth to own their future, contribute to society, and stay on positive paths along each stage of life’s journey. To achieve our mission, we design culturally responsive, accessible, interdisciplinary and hands-on learning experiences that enable our learners to explore who they are, reflect on the impact they want to make, and access the tools and resources needed to take action. These programs are subsidized and designed to be implemented in the classroom, as part of the school curriculum.

🟠 Orange Shirt Day - National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡 Sept 30th is a Canadian day of memorial to recognize the atrocities and generational impact caused by the Canadian Indian residential school system. The last residential school closed in 1996. Today, it is not only about the past, it is very much about the present day and our common future as a country. Educating ourselves is key. As an educational non-profit serving equity-deserving youth, we decided to share some great resources that we leveraged and could help you start or enrich your learning journey toward Truth and Reconciliation. #Orangeshirtday #Truthandreconciliation #94calls #NDTR

We entered the #NationalIndigenousHistoryMonth, a time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métisin Canada. At UpstartED, we believe in the transformative power of education to drive meaningful change. In line with our mission to empower youth and educators, we take the #215Pledge by the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, dedicated to the memory of the 215 Indigenous children whose remains were found at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, and the many more yet to be discovered. The 215 Pledge is more than a commitment—it's a call to action for individuals and organizations to engage in the journey towards #TruthandReconciliation. The Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair, Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, pointed to education as the key to reconciliation, stating, “Education got us into this mess and education will get us out of it.” At UpstartED, we believe in education as a liberating tool. Since 2021, we have taken concrete actions by incorporating Indigenous perspectives in our program through a community-centred learning design process. These actions foster meaningful dialogues in Canadian classrooms and participate in the collective healing of Indigenous and non-Indigenous teenagers. You too can take the pledge! Apathy is not an option. To learn more about the 215Pledge: https://www.215pledge.ca/

It’s been three years since the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation announced that preliminary findings indicated that the remains of 215 children were buried at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. Since that time, more communities throughout the country have announced findings of potential graves and more searches are underway. In the wake of this announcement, people throughout Canada joined together in solidarity to express their shock, grief, and determination to confront the harmful legacy of residential schools. In towns and cities from coast to coast to coast, people wore orange instead of red and white as part of the #CancelCanadaDay movement. Since 2021, we have seen a troubling trend of apathy and denialism. To help combat denialism and create a more informed and compassionate society, we must prioritize accurate education about the history of residential schools. Today, we invite you to recommit to learning and sharing the #truehistory and ongoing impact of Canada’s residential school system and to #DoSomething to move reconciliation forward in your communities. Take the pledge and join us in taking action: www.215pledge.ca
