On September 30, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation offers British Columbians an opportunity to recognize the history and impact of the residential school system and to honour the strength of survivors and their families. September 30 also marks Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led initiative to raise awareness and commemorate the experiences of Residential School Survivors over a decade ago. At Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), we are committed to reconciliation and delivering care informed by the history and culture of Indigenous Peoples. We continue to advance the understanding and practice of Indigenous Cultural Safety (ICS) in partnership with staff and medical staff across VCH. As of June 2024, over 24,000 staff and medical staff have participated in ICS training. In recent years we’ve implemented a number of new Indigenous Health programs and renamed hospitals, sites, and facilities across our communities through engagement and partnership with local First Nations. Today, we encourage everyone to learn, engage and reflect on our shared steps towards reconciliation. Learn more about the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at https://lnkd.in/dyVmFuSd

Leading up to National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, residents at Adanac Park Lodge, a long-term care home in East Vancouver, recently witnessed the unveiling of two Indigenous paintings that many of them took part in creating. “Approximately 20 per cent of residents here at Adanac Park Lodge are Indigenous,” says Staci Kalmek, Manager of the care home. “We knew there was more we could do to represent Indigenous culture here, and that included having artwork to make this a more welcoming place for Indigenous residents, family members, and staff.” Chief Kwakwee Baker is a Squamish and Kwakwakaʼwakw artist. Over the summer he worked directly with Adanac Lodge residents and staff to bring their vision to life. Together, they identified the key themes – sunrise and sunset – featured in the artwork.
