Thank you for a wonderful summer, Hastings Racecourse & Casino! 🏇 From July through to October, the GVFB ran the 50/50 on weekends at Hastings Racecourse, which raised $44,170.85 in support of our operations! This partnership allowed us to connect with the wonderful community at Hastings Racecourse, while supporting our mission of providing healthy food to those in need. Ugly Potato Day 🥔 🌧️ Despite the torrential rain, over 15,000 people came out to partake in the biggest Ugly Produce Day yet! Thank you to HEPPELL'S POTATO CORP. and our amazing local farmers; we had over 250,000 lbs of fresh, nutritious produce available, including: 🥔 Potatoes 🍎 Apples 🧄 Garlic 🍠 Squash 🥕 Carrots ...and more! However, due to the overwhelming turnout, many guests were turned away by noon. The number of people who showed up for free produce shows the growing need and the broken food system that impacts our province. As we always say, "There is no shortage of food—just a distribution problem." Thank you to everyone who participated and supported our community. We’re grateful to partner with Heppell’s Potato to help redirect surplus food to neighbours in need. This year, we took a bold step to extend our support to BC farmers who have faced challenge after challenge, from devastating crop losses after a frosty spring to the long-term effects of the BC Tree Fruit closure.     This year, we sent our team to purchase the entire apple crop from several Okanagan orchards, including Ken Witzke, who has worked with us for over 39 years—our longest farming relationship! 🌱     Our Agricultural Partnerships Lead, Rhandi Neal, shares the story of Ken and Linda, who explain what food security means to them.
