Today, we observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We honour the children who never returned home, the residential school survivors, their loved ones and their communities. As a Canadian company operating on the homelands of Indigenous Peoples, we recognize the importance of our responsibilities toward reconciliation. In 2022, Wawanesa made the decision to close our offices across Canada on September 30 as an act of reconciliation and to honour the intent of the day. We provide our employees with this day to learn, reflect, and remember as part of our reconciliation journey. #NDTR #EveryChildMatters

Earlier this year, we introduced an Indigenous Employee Resource Group at Wawanesa. This employee-led group is building community for Indigenous employees and allies. Through programming for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the group hosted a special hybrid event with Dr. Niigaan Sinclair for our employees across Canada. Dr. Sinclair shared a powerful message about reconciliation and the origins of Orange Shirt Day. We’re grateful to have this ERG delivering impactful learning opportunities for our employees under the leadership of group Co-leads Crystal Hiebert and Samantha Rivard, Executive Sponsor Guy Delaurier and Executive Mentor Mike Brisebois.

On this day 128 years ago, Wawanesa was founded, built on values that still guide us today: caring for our members and communities. To celebrate, our employees across Canada are coming together once again as #WawanesaClimateChampions this week to plant trees and make a lasting impact. Thank you to everyone who helps strengthen our communities year after year. Happy Anniversary, Wawanesa!
