We’re thankful to be working with such a great team on this Ottawa project: Cadillac Fairview, NEUF architect(e)s, Smith + Andersen, Entuitive, and Reliance Construction. Rideau Registry is a very unique project with the relocation of the historic City Registry Building, integration with the CF Rideau Centre, and configuration of wide suite layouts. This week marked the topping off of Rideau Registry in Ottawa, with the final concrete slab on Level 22 poured on March 6, and window wall installed to Level 10. Once completed, this 288-unit residential rental building will be integrated with CF Rideau Centre, Ottawa’s largest shopping mall. A huge thanks and congratulations to our core team for making this milestone possible — Zeidler Architecture, NEUF architect(e)s, Smith + Andersen, Entuitive, and Reliance Construction. In addition to the modern residences, the project includes the restoration of the 150-year-old Registry Office. At first glance, this staircase may appear straightforward, but there's a fascinating story behind its design! It's all about the twists and turns—who knew stairs could have such curve appeal? We are excited to reflect on our work on this staircase for the BMO Academy in Toronto, created in collaboration with the talented teams at EllisDon and Zeidler Architecture. There is much more than meets the eye; we wanted to showcase some of that! Ian Franceschi, the creative director at Zeidler Architects, explains the wave design concept: "We focused on water and the 'ripple effect,' using soft imagery to create a welcoming atmosphere for learning and collaboration." The heavier mass of the stairs faces the atrium, providing users with a broader view while ascending. Conversely, those descending into the learning space feel enveloped and guided toward its unique architectural features. A unique aspect of this staircase is the top edges of the steel stringers, which are designed with wave outlines and seamlessly transition into and out of the glass balustrades. This presented a challenge, as the size and scale of the structure needed to be quite significant, as represented in the images below. Another interesting feature is the glimpse of the wooden treads and risers at a low point in the curve. This thoughtfully designed staircase serves as a focal point of the BMO Academy, creating an inspiring environment for both students and educators. As individuals navigate this stunning architectural feature, they are reminded of the fluidity and creativity inherent in knowledge and collaboration. We are proud to have contributed to bringing this vision to life and look forward to seeing how it positively impacts the community's learning experience for years to come.
