Get to know your ALPA Canada Officers! WestJet Capt. Tim Perry serves as the ALPA Canada president, proudly representing close to 11,700 pilots at 21 Canadian airlines before Parliament and around the world, leading a team of pilot representatives in leadership positions at ALPA, the Int’l Federation of Air Line Pilots Associations (IFALPA), and the Int’l Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). He began his four-year term on Jan. 1, 2023. Capt. Perry routinely provides testimony to the Canadian government to address labour issues and advocate for aviation safety and security advancements and protections. Under his leadership, the government looked to labour organizations such as ALPA Canada to ensure the short- and long-term success of Canadian air travel throughout the global pandemic. This advocacy role will remain a core tenet throughout Capt. Perry’s term of service as the industry rebounds and grows to accommodate returning travel demand and a balanced pilot supply. As a diplomatic labour leader, he supports the growing pilot labour force in Canada and advocates to promote and protect our airline pilots, aviation safety and security, and the future of the profession. ALPA’s Board of Directors reelected Capt. Perry to ALPA Canada president by acclimation on Oct. 19, 2022, at the Association’s biennial Board of Directors meeting. He brings 15+ years of ALPA experience and previously served as the Association’s executive vice president for Group C. At WestJet, Capt. Perry served as the former Master Executive Council vice chair and played a key role in the organizing campaign that ultimately led to its certification of ALPA as its labour union. He joined ALPA in 2006, flying for Calm Air where he served as a Local Executive Council representative. Capt. Perry is based, and lives, in Toronto, Ont. and flies the B737 for WestJet. He graduated from Selkirk College with a diploma in Aviation Technology.  https://lnkd.in/euWt6Y9m

With Labour Day weekend upon us, now is the perfect time to look back at what has been an incredibly busy and productive summer for ALPA Canada, and remind everyone of the important role we at ALPA Canada play in Canadian society. As we continue to grow and build our unity, we have firmly entrenched ourselves as the voice of the piloting profession in Canada, which further enhances our strength and reputation. We have a stronger voice than ever before, a voice that is heard across the aviation industry, the travelling public, and within the halls of Parliament. As noted above, Labour Day is a time to reflect on our accomplishments and recognize the hard work of those responsible for those accomplishments, our members, staff, and volunteers.   Whether it be newly negotiated contracts, the passage of legislation that improved safety and helps our members, or building our committees and volunteer base, we know that we are better positioned than ever before to make real, significant change. -

ALPA Canada has made significant progress in advancing the Association’s pilot agenda on Parliament Hill amid a political landscape that has become increasingly antagonistic as parliamentarians begin shifting into election mode in advance of a federal general election slated for October 2025. Industry stakeholders are working to reduce safety by taking pilots off the flight deck, but ALPA, the European Cockpit Association (European Pilots), and The International Federation of Air Line Pilots' Associations (IFALPA) are united to stop them. In the latest episode of Air Line Pilot Podcast, ALPA President, Jason Ambrosi interviews ECA President Otjan de Bruijn about the risks and hazards associated with single pilot operations. He also talks with IFALPA Deputy President (and an ALPA member) Ron Hay about ALPA’s work on the international stage to prevent single pilot operations, and ALPA Canada President Tim Perry about what ALPA is doing in Canada to inform members, decision-makers, and the public about the risks of reduced crew operations. ALPA Canada Responds to Government Intervention in CN/CPKC Shutdown En français OTTAWA, ONT. — Today, ALPA Canada president Capt. Tim Perry issued the following statement in response to the government of Canada reversing its position to allow CN/CPKC rail workers the opportunity to utilize all the tools available to them under the Canada Labour Code, by asking the Canada Industrial Relations Board to settle the outstanding terms of the collective agreements and impose final binding arbitration. “The government’s decision to intervene in the labour dispute between CN/CPKC and rail workers, represented by the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (Teamsters), less than 24 hours after the lock out began is truly disappointing. “The Canada Labour Code strives for balance in collective bargaining, and this action by the government of Canada amounts to putting its finger on the scales. ALPA Canada believes it is always in the best interests of both sides to negotiate contracts in good faith at the negotiating table while being allowed to utilize all the functions available under the Canadian Labour Code, including strike and lockout provisions. “Labour disputes such as this are deeply concerning to the public, but this situation is even more troubling for our members, and all workers, whose rights afforded to them under the Canada Labour Code are being eroded, and frankly, disrespected, by government intervention like this. “Within our own association, as a result of slow progress at the bargaining table and a management team that continues to fail to properly value its employees, yesterday the Air Canada pilots voted 98% in favour of authorizing job action under the Canada Labour Code. To ensure fairness, that must mean having all legal and constitutional options available during our negotiating cycle with Air Canada management. The right to strike is a constitutional one and must be respected. “If and when the time comes, we expect the government to respect the collective bargaining process and uphold the rights of Air Canada pilots. We strongly encourage the government to stand by their earlier public statements, that it is in the best interests of both sides to continue dialogue at the negotiating table to reach an agreement … without government intervention.”  Founded in 1931, ALPA is the largest airline pilot union in the world, representing more than 78,000 pilots at 41 U.S. and Canadian airlines. The Abbotsford International Airshow is touted as the premier Canadian airshow, and last week ALPA’s Education Committee used the opportunity to spark interest in the pilot profession, mentor aspiring aviators, and engage with approximately 1,500 people during the three-day event August 9-11. ALPA’s tent was in a prime location by the entrance of the interactive STEM Zone, drawing in students of all ages to speak with pilots and fly one of the flight simulators to earn their (plastic) ALPA wings. Pilot volunteers from several ALPA-represented pilot groups shared their experiences and answered countless questions about ALPA, the profession, and how to become a pilot.
