We are pleased to share IFALPA’s latest Position Paper, Pilot Participation in Safety Risk Assessments. This paper advocates for the inclusion of pilot safety advocates in the Safety Risk Assessment (SRA) process, emphasizing the need for their frontline operational expertise in ensuring comprehensive and effective safety analysis. While ICAO Annex 19 and the Safety Management Manual outline the importance of conducting risk assessments, many airline safety departments exclude pilot associations, leading to potentially biased outcomes. IFALPA argues that incorporating these advocates fosters trust, transparency, and a stronger safety culture, resulting in improved risk mitigation, operational procedures, and collaboration. We encourage you to review the paper and share it within your networks, as we continue to work towards a safer, more collaborative future in aviation. https://bit.ly/3zfNeYY #Pilots #SafetyCulture

Happy to host this year’s summer meeting of the IFALPA Security Coordination Group at Vereinigung Cockpit premises, which was all about GPS jamming and spoofing. The effects, dangers and possible remedies were discussed. In addition, International Civil Aviation Organization documents were revised and commented on and the new EU and UK liquids regulations in connection with the C3 baggage scanners were discussed. Many thanks to all participants for a very productive meeting.

Why are women still underrepresented in aviation? Barriers to entry, along with challenges around retention and career advancement, remain significant concerns for women in many aviation professions. Organizations like the International Aviation Women's Association (IAWA) are actively addressing these issues. As part of these efforts, IAWA invited Captain Priya Doobaree, IFALPA's Representative to ICAO and Female Pilots’ Working Group Rep, to speak as a panelist at their IAWA Connect event during last week's conference events. The panel explored strategies to encourage more women to pursue careers in STEM, with a particular focus on the aviation industry. #Womeninaviation #femalepilots #womenpilots

It was a pleasure to take part in the #IAWA workshop focusing on women in STEM alongside Marie-Pier Berman from NAV Canada, Priya Doobaree from IFALPA and Becky Johnson from GE. Special thanks to Beatrice Dragomir from IATA for her excellent facilitation of the discussion. It was really also very encouraging to meet some very talented young women starting their careers in engineering at the networking event!

At the International Civil Aviation Organization Air Navigation Conference yesterday, IFALPA’s Air Traffic Services Committee Chair, Cpt Paul Vissers made an intervention supporting working papers on safe Higher Airspace Operations- Proposals to improve the efficiency of air navigation services contributing to Long Term Aspirational Goals (LTAG). As commercial space operations continue to grow, it’s crucial for States to ensure that all operators adhere to responsible and predictable launch and re-entry trajectories. This is vital for the safety of our skies and the populations below them. We must work together to develop operational concepts and enhance the capabilities of Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs)—organizations responsible for managing air traffic and ensuring safe and efficient airspace use. This includes establishing space vehicle airworthiness standards, separation standards, and real-time information sharing between space operators and ANSPs. Real-time airspace management will be key to efficient and safe airspace utilization. The need for clear guidelines and international cooperation has never been more urgent. Let’s ensure our skies remain safe as we enter this new frontier. For more insights, check out our detailed position paper on this issue: https://lnkd.in/emk_Vaas #AviationSafety #CommercialSpaceOperations #ANSP #ICAO #AirspaceIntegration

This week at the International Civil Aviation Organization Air Navigation Conference in Montreal: IFALPA Climate Working Group Chair Cpt Robert Brons spoke in support of Working Paper 98, entitled TURBULENCE ENCOUNTERS AS GLOBAL OPERATIONAL SAFETY RISK, presented by Japan and Singapore and co-sponsored by Philippines, Thailand, Airports Council International (ACI) and International Air Transport Association (IATA), https://lnkd.in/ef8hbr67 Why does it matter to pilots? Aviation turbulence forecasting isn't perfect, and with climate change, turbulence encounters are expected to rise. That's why IFALPA stands behind Working Paper 98. We urge ICAO to encourage States and the industry to share their best practices on turbulence encounters. Pilots require up-to-date, accurate turbulence reports, including special air-reports (ARS), shared proactively before and during flights. IFALPA also calls on the scientific and meteorological communities to push forward with research on clear air turbulence (CAT) forecasting. More reliable predictions are the key to a safe and efficient preventive strategy. Let’s work together for safer skies! #ICAO #AviationSafety #turbulence #climatechange #AviationIndustry #safeskies #pilots
