Throwing back to last year's Generator at Sheridan Growth Grant-funded research that helped inform the development of a holistic toolkit of trauma-informed, individual, and collective wellness strategies for the teaching and learning community at Sheridan. A collaborative effort between Sheridan College faculty and staff from the Faculty of Applied Health and Community Studies, the Centre for Equity and Inclusion, and SPARK: The Sheridan Centre for Academic Excellence, this research addressed ways of supporting members of the teaching and learning community at Sheridan who may experience symptoms of burnout, compassion fatigue, empathic distress, ethno-stress, and vicarious trauma. With rising inflation impacting an increasingly competitive retail market, businesses are looking for innovative ways of engaging customers and raising revenue. Supported by a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) – Applied Research and Development grant, the Centre for Applied AI leveraged their expertise with AI algorithms and data analytics assessment to reveal helpful retail insights, such as customer age and interactions and which products are under or overperforming, for Encore Market Engagement. Led by Dr. Nick Sajadi, Professor in the Sheridan College Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, the research provided strategies to encourage efficiencies and increased sales for retail businesses, and ways of supporting the environment by reducing waste from discarded unsold or expired products. Generator at Sheridan’s Centre for Intelligent Manufacturing (CIM) recently welcomed a visit from several advanced manufacturing innovation incubators based out of the United Kingdom. Jointly coordinated by MaRS Discovery District and Innovate UK, the groups toured CIM's state-of-the-art research labs and equipment at Sheridan College’s Davis Campus, learning about the Centre’s role as a future-forward applied research centre in the Canadian manufacturing ecosystem. In addition, the visit explored collaborative opportunities to innovate with Sheridan and other intelligent manufacturing partners in Canada. A collaborative partner of MaRS, CIM is among several other partners including Toronto Global, George Brown College, and KITE UHN that are contributing supportive engagement and insight to the Mobility Unlimited Hub, an initiative developed by MaRS and Toyota Mobility Foundation to help accelerate the development and adoption of early-stage personal mobility technologies among start-ups and innovators in the active mobility sector. Thanks to Life Sciences Ontario for visiting our #research #innovation and #entrepreneurship spaces at Sheridan College's Trafalgar Road Campus. This was a great opportunity to showcase the breadth of expertise from our Research Centres and to discuss ways that Generator can support the life sciences sector with impactful innovation. This includes research from the Sheridan Centre for Elder Research that explores supporting over-extended frontline healthcare workers with music and meditation and understanding factors affecting food insecurity among older adults in Hamilton, Halton and Peel Regions, and research from the Centre for Applied AI that leverages AI to develop an automated chronic pain management system and an AI-powered stethoscope that assists with medical assessment and triaging. What do Top Gun: Maverick, The Mandalorian, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever have in common? They all harness the power of virtual production which has revolutionized filmmaking by leveraging technologies such as augmented reality and advanced motion capture to create realistic environments and effects on a virtual set. This week, CityNews visited Generator at Sheridan's SIRT Centre at Pinewood Toronto Studios to take a closer look at how students are gaining immersive experience in this cutting-edge tech through our 12-week Virtual Production micro-credential program. Full scholarships for all 20 seats in this unique program are provided by Warner Bros. Discovery Access Programs which creates pathways for Canadian creative and technical talent with an emphasis on championing voices from historically underrepresented groups, including Indigenous, Black, and racialized communities, as well as people living with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ2+ communities.
