Thank You Earthworm Foundation for inviting me to present at your workshop last week in Geneva. The focus was on the importance of Artisinal and Small Scale Mining (ASM), the role of Intermediate Refiners as well as Processing Plants (need for clearer definitions!) and what practical steps are needed to address some of the challenges. Over the years there has been a preference to de-risk and remove ASM gold from supply chains given social and environmental challenges . Furthermore, progressive improvement has been hindered by the need for perfection and risk elimination. We have to change this attitude by focusing on progress and work with key actors to scale responsible ASM. Intermediate Refiners (IR) are critical actors in LBMA ‘s ASM Initiative. They are attractive partners to LBMA GDL refiners because they provide stable and sizeable volumes of legally mined gold bearing material, apply necessary due diligence on their counterparts, and smelt the ore using modern techniques, rather than environmentally harmful chemicals such as mercury. Great to have helpful contributions from downstream LVMH Watches & Jewelry , and also Refiners Argor-Heraeus SA , Metalor Technologies SA , Px Précinox S.A. and Civil Society - all who recognise that we have to work together with those on the ground to increase responsible asm gold. #gold #supplychains #asm LBMA
