Die ASA ist ein gemeinnütziger Verein mit über 1200 Mitgliedern - davon mehr als 450 aus dem Ausland, alle Praktiker und Akademiker, die sich mit der nationalen und internationalen Schiedsgerichtsbarkeit beschäftigen bzw. sich für diese interessieren. Die Mitgliedschaft steht allen Nationalitäten offen, unabhängig von der Erfahrungsebene. Seit ihrer Gründung im Jahre 1974 hat sie sich zu einer der führenden Schiedsgerichtsvereinigungen entwickelt, in der die bedeutendsten Schiedsrichter der Welt zusammengeschlossen sind. Die ASA ist jedoch keine Schiedsinstitution und führt keine Schiedsverfahren durch.
