Steuererleichterungen und Subventionen wirken sich unbeabsichtigt negativ auf das Klima aus und belasten den Staatshaushalt. 💸🔨 Das kam Ende letzten Jahres bei einer Studie der EPFL und Université de Lausanne heraus, die Clima Now mitfinanziert hat. Heute um 7:00 Uhr haben wir die Erkenntnisse präsentiert. 🇨🇭 Am Sonntag hat die Schweiz als erstes Land weltweit darüber abgestimmt, seine Wirtschaft innerhalb der planetaren Grenzen zu gestalten. 🌍 Die „Umweltverantwortungsinitiative“ wurde deutlich abgelehnt – vor allem wegen der zu extremen Umsetzung in den nächsten 10 Jahren. Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are the centerpiece of the Paris Climate Agreement. They represent the self-imposed climate protection contributions in which each country defines its targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change by 2050. 🎯 #NDCs contain concrete reduction targets, adaptation measures and strategies for implementation and must be updated every five years with more ambitious targets. Although the targets themselves are not legally binding, there are rules for reviewing progress. By February 2025, all Paris Agreement countries must announce their NDCs for the period up to 2035. Last week, Switzerland published its NDCs. There are clear shortcomings: 🔽 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The Swiss NDCs are not sufficient to comply with the Paris Agreement. Despite the legally enshrined net-zero target by 2050, the Climate Action Tracker classifies the Swiss targets as “insufficient”. The main point of criticism is the lack of a domestic reduction target. The originally planned target of reducing 75% of emissions domestically was removed in the current report. Without a binding domestic reduction target, it remains unclear how much Switzerland actually wants to achieve domestically. This weakens the credibility of Swiss climate policy in an international context. ❌ 𝐋𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The NDCs are based on the Confederation's new climate protection targets. Although enshrined in law, the targets are not followed by any or only inadequate measures: 🏗️ Reduction targets for individual sectors have been adopted, measures for these are being implemented inadequately and inconsistently - or scrapped altogether like the buildings program, which has worked successfully. ⚖️ The federal government wants to be climate-neutral by 2040, but there are no corresponding ordinances. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: We need more ambition and above all the implementation of what the NDC promises!
