Last week, I was honored to participate in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 in 𝐀𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐚, 𝐊𝐚𝐳𝐚𝐤𝐡𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧. The event, titled “Spurring Innovation to Drive Economic Growth and Social Development: Central Asia and Beyond”, was the first regional launch in over 60 national and regional events following the GII’s global launch.
The event in Astana highlighted Kazakhstan and Central Asia’s growing role on the global innovation stage. It brought together leading minds and decision-makers from across the region and beyond, highlighting Kazakhstan's and its neighbors' dedication to strengthening their innovation ecosystems.
The ceremony was attended by many government officials, including H.E. Azamat Yeskarayev, Minister of Justice; H.E. Zhaslan Madiyev, Minister of Digital Development, Innovations, and Aerospace Industry; H.E. Galymzhan Koishybayev, Deputy Prime Minister; and Head of the Administration of the Government Dr. Kunsulu Zakaya, Advisor to the President of Kazakhstan. Around 50 countries were represented, the majority from Central Asia, but also Mongolia, Malaysia and Singapore, the Gulf countries including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates and other world regions, as well as high-level representatives from the Eurasian Patent Organization - EAPO, Shanghai Cooperation Organization, The World Bank and the United Nations.
It was a pleasure to meet with a diverse range of corporate and government innovation actors, who share the vision of leveraging innovation for economic growth and social development across Central Asia and beyond.

This reflects the country’s potential to become a regional innovation hub, particularly in digital infrastructure and services, energy technologies, and space.
Over two days, I visited key innovation sites, including the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry, the Astana Hub Digital TechnoPark and the National Center of Space Research and Technology. These hubs are important in nurturing start-ups and attracting international partners, exemplifying Kazakhstan’s ambitions in high-tech fields like aerospace and AI. A highlight was witnessing live venture capital pitches from impressive AI and HealthTech start-ups in front of potential investors.
Going forward, the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO will continue supporting initiatives through innovation policy, the GII, technology transfer and IP capacity-building.
I look forward to participating in more regional GII launches worldwide, helping countries leverage innovation for a brighter future.
