🌊✨ Ocean Science Expedition Update ✨🌊 As they head for their final destination in Alaska, the crew of the Abel Tasman have been extremely busy over the last couple of weeks, not least battling the very challenging conditions: 📍 The crew arrived in the historic gold mining town of Nome, their penultimate stop of the expedition. Nome, known for its gold rush history and featured in the Discovery Channel's 'Bering Sea Gold,' presented a stark contrast with its 'Mad Max' style gold mining floats against the natural Arctic landscapes. ❄️ Nome marks the official end of the Northwest Passage! The crew spent five days here, making necessary repairs to the Abel Tasman with the help of local sailing expert Rolland. Sylvestre took to the skies one last time in his paramotor, capturing a stunning sunset over the harbour. Sylvestre and Ramon bid farewell to the crew and headed back home. 🎤 Keith gave a virtual talk for The Explorers Club in New York, discussing the Arctic Tipping Points and the data collection conducted onboard. He was joined by Dr. Sylvia Earle and Professor Johan Rockström to discuss the latest science on Planetary Boundaries and Tipping Points, highlighting the expedition's real-time observations. 🌬️ After departing Nome, good winds carried the crew south towards the Aleutian Islands. Data collection of eDNA and microplastics continued as they sailed through the Bering Sea into the North Pacific Ocean. The Abel Tasman arrived in the Aleutian Islands, home to diverse seabirds, mammals, and fish. 🌪️ Turning east towards Homer, the crew detected a large cyclone with wind speeds of 175 kph and waves of 15 m. They sought shelter in Chignik, exploring local waterfalls and landscapes while waiting for the storm to pass. 🌍 At the recent FT Mining conference, Nicholas Snowdon, our Head of Mining & Metals Research, shared valuable insights during the panel discussion on "Supply, Demand, and Decarbonisation." Nicholas discussed the significant hurdles the mining industry faces in meeting the growing demand for metals essential to the energy transition. He highlighted three critical challenges: permitting, declining ore grades, and capital constraints. He also emphasized the crucial role of collaboration, stressing the importance of both dialogue with government and feedback from the industry. By 2030, a nature-positive economy could unlock over $10 trillion in annual business value and create 395 million high-quality jobs. 🌿🐘🍄 Natural capital underpins the entire global economy, and provides a range of critical benefits to humanity. However, the true value of nature remains unaccounted for in our current economic systems. In fact, the destruction of nature is incentivised at the expense of economic growth. While GDP and produced capital per person have nearly doubled in the last two decades, natural capital per person has plummeted by almost 40%. To address this disparity, closing the biodiversity finance gap is crucial.   We are excited to share UpLink’s latest report, 'Investing in Natural Capital: Innovations Supporting Much-Needed Financing for Nature'. This insightful report has been developed as a collaboration with UpLink - World Economic Forum, the WEF's Nature Action Agenda, and 1t.org, in partnership with us, and we were privileged to have contributed one of the forwards.   The report dives into how innovative financial solutions are making it more feasible and attractive to invest in natural capital. The crew of the Northwest Passage Ocean Science Expedition ⛵️ is flying the Climate Stripes on their Gennaker sail, vividly depicting the progression of global warming 🌡️. This is the first time this visual has been displayed in such a way at sea and sends a powerful message about our warming world. Created by Professor Ed Hawkins at Reading University in 2018, each stripe represents the average temperature for a single year from 1850-2023 📈, relative to the average temperature over the period as a whole. Blue 🟦 indicates cooler-than-average years and red 🟥 hotter-than-average years. We’re proud to support this expedition, which is both researching and creating awareness of our rapidly changing planet . The Arctic ❄️ is crucial for regulating global climate, but is warming 3-4x faster than the rest of the world. It is now 3°C warmer than it was in 1980! The crew are witnessing firsthand the extreme and cascading effects of climate change from shrinking sea ice to rapidly melting ice sheets as they navigate through six Climate Tipping Points.
