I'm happy to share a new paper "Freeing imagination for fair and resilient future cities", published in Nature Portfolio Cities. We explore how #inclusive #futurevisioning offers a tested addition to the established repertoires of #urban #foresight and #planning. One that can help move past embedded assumptions of #desirable and actionable futures at a time when rapid #urbanization and #climatechange open a global opportunity and urgency for building #resilience into new urban form. https://lnkd.in/d3MqADzy We distinguish between three approaches to future visioning: #probabilistic, #exploratory and #normative approaches - arguing each method which brings a distinctive focus to long-term, future-oriented #decisionmaking. Our experiments highlight that innovation in urban future thinking relies not on a singular method, but in the blending of multiple methodological elements and knowledge #competencies to fit #contextualneeds and #policyopportunities. Experiences in deploying #futurevisioning point to three key elements of an agenda for #research and development: voice, science and action: 1. #Voice considers who participates in the design and deployment of future visions and how interests and perspectives are translated into #adaptation on the ground. 2. #Science examines the application of observational or modeled data to provide guidance for more #evidencebased normative approaches. Being clear about any #assumptions and #uncertainties in #projectedtrends and how these change in different contexts including over time helps participants to evaluate the weight to be put on science inputs and other more #experiential or #traditionalknowledge. 3. #Action makes visioning meaningful. Commitment to #act on the outcomes requires political actors to have the will to bring currently marginalized voices into decision-making and to integrate the findings of future visioning into adaptation #policy and #projectmanagement processes, and for directions to change as a result.
