🌲 Happy International Day of Forests! 🍃 To celebrate Alpine forests, we are looking back at one of our many projects that investigated their critical role in the Alpine region: project RockTheAlps. This project ran from November 2016 to December 2019. It aimed tat integrating forests into local rock fall protection policies. 🏔️ The challenge? Forests cover 40% of the Alpine area and are an effective and low cost natural protection from rock falls. Yet there was no frameowork to integrate data about forests and rock fall risk in order to use it for policy-making. ➡️ Our solution: RockTheAlps gathered data on over 10,620 rockfall events in the Alps and beyond, calculated rockfall and protection models, and used them to map protection forests across 400,000 km² of the Alps. This knowledge is now accessible to policymakers and stakeholders involved in rockfall protection. 📌 Key outcomes: 1️⃣ Comprehensive database of past rockfall events in the Alpine Space. 2️⃣ First harmonized rockfall risk and protection forest web maps for the Alpine region. 3️⃣ Tools and methodologies to assess rockfall risks and the protective role of forests. 👉 Discover more about this project in our Project Library: https://lnkd.in/dbHyAauA 🙌 If you are interested in this topic, join us in Salzburg in May to celebrate our 25th Anniversary. Today is the first World Day for Glaciers. ❄️ Why care about glaciers? 💧 Glaciers are key elements in the functioning of the Earth system, as well as a fundamental freshwater reserve. Yet, they are not only that. 🦠 They are ecosystems with complex mechanisms that we are still trying to fully grasp. 🏔️ They are part of Alpine and mountain cultures around the world; they are incredible places, full of wonder, potential knowledge and experiences that are slowly fading away. 🌎 For all of these reasons, mitigating climate change and stopping their melting is one of the key challenges of humanity. That is why the United Nations have declared 2025 the International Year of Glacier’s Preservation. 🥵 Alpine glaciers are melting at an alarming speed, thus rapidly altering freshwater dynamics and availability in the Alps. ✅ Our project Waterwise - Interreg Alpine Space aims to leverage recent advances in modelling techniques to assess the vulnerability of headwaters to climate and land-use changes, and to make them accessible to local water and land managers. The project partecipated in the launch of the International Year of Glaciers in January with a side event on “Future Mountain Groundwater Resources”. 🏞️ Alpine lakes are an extremely fragile and at risk habitat. 🔬 The Interreg Alpine Space project DiMark aims to monitor and create early warning system solutions to mitigate tourism and eutrophication pressure on Alpine lakes. 🌾 What is eutrophication? It is a process in which nutrients accumulate in a body of water, resulting in an increased growth of organisms that may deplete the oxygen in the water. Lack of oxygen, in turn, causes a loss of biodiversity and general degradation of the ecosystem. 💧 Using the expertise and tools that it has been building up, the project has recently submitted its contribution to the European Water Resiliency Strategy, an initiative to put water efficiency into practice in all relevant sectors. 📍 The project’s contributions highlighted the role of satellite monitoring, digitalisation and the need to harmonise cyanobacterial bloom detection methods. Congratulations to DiMark! 👏 ➡️ Read the news here: https://lnkd.in/dxfv8Ed7 National Institute of Biology Research Department for Limnology, Mondsee of the Universität Innsbruck Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety Fondazione Edmund Mach ARPAV Universität Konstanz INRAE e-ZAVOD Eawag #MadeWithInterreg #MadeWithAlpineSpace #Interreg #ProjectNews #InterregAlpineSpace #DiMark

👩🏫Interreg Alpine Space project YOUrALPS ran from November 2016 to October 2019. This project focused on reconnecting youth with the Alpine natural and cultural heritage through education. 🏔️ The challenge? Sustainability can only become a core value in the development of the Alps if people understand its importance, starting with young people. ➡️ Our solution: YOUrALPS brought together educators, associations, protected areas, and NGOs to develop a new school model highlighting the interdependent environmental and social processes in the Alps. Over 2,000 pupils engaged in outdoor activities, new technologies, and hands-on projects to study the Alps from various perspectives. 📌 Key outcomes: 1️⃣ A comparative report analyzing existing mountain-oriented education practices in the Alps. 2️⃣ An Alpine School Model, an innovative educational approach promoting interconnected formal and non-formal territorial educational systems. 3️⃣ Educational tools and resources to support the implementation of mountain-oriented education. Interreg Alpine Space turns 25 in 2025 - but what happened in these two and a half decades? Let’s take a look! 🕵️♀️ 💶 Interreg programmes are financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The ERDF is a Structural Fund of the European Union. 📊 Its management is done over Programming Periods, multi-annual development plans with specific policy objectives, each lasting 7 years. 🏔️ Interreg Alpine Space has run over 4 programming periods, including the current one: 1️⃣ 2000-2006 2️⃣ 2007-2013 3️⃣ 2014-2020 4️⃣ 2021-2027 🤝 Over the past 25 years, the Interreg Alpine Space programme has received approximately €400 million in ERDF funding, which co-financed hundreds of projects with thousands of project partners from the 7 Alpine countries. For the 2021-2027 period, the programme's ERDF budget is €107 million. It is to honor this legacy and gather inspiration for the future that we will be holding our 25th Anniversary event on May 12-13-14 2025 in Salzburg (AT).
