Partners For Patients NGO is deeply humbled and appreciative for The Pan-African Parliament, African Union and Parliament of Ghana for their endorsement to inaugurate our first Early Cancer Detection and Cancer Research Centre located at C. K. Tedam Uni. of Tech. & Applied Sciences in Navrongo, Ghana. Breast cancer patients diagnosed at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital in Ghana has risen remarkably from 2014 (2%) and peaked in 2018 (39%). Recent interim data is showing an even higher increase, but early detection is saving lives by 15% when treatment is available. In Ghana, data obtained via Globocan indicates that new patients of breast cancer in 2018 represented 20.4% of all cancers in both sexes and 33.6% in females. Breast cancer had the highest incidence of new cancers, followed by cervical cancer and liver cancer. We are all exhilarated to experience at yesterday’s April 12th ODAC meeting, the very well deserved recognition from the FDA & the Oncologic Drug Advisory Committee (ODAC) to our dear friend & mentor, Dr. Brian M. Durie, co-founder at the International Myeloma Foundation and the leader of the i2TEAMM on MRD testing as an early endpoint in clinical trials. This is a monumental moment for MM patients with an unanimously historical vote in favor (12-0) of using minimal residual disease (MRD) as an early endpoint for accelerated approval in multiple myeloma clinical trials. This means that the FDA may approve multiple myeloma drugs in the development pipeline much sooner. To date, many myeloma drug approvals take 9-12 years and must demonstrate a progression-free survival of 5-8 years. With MRD testing as an early endpoint in clinical trials, researchers can reliably predict progression-free survival and overall survival for multiple myeloma patients, making it a precise early endpoint. A very emotional moment to etch into our hearts for many of us in the Myeloma Community. Evidence Advocacy is not easy, in fact, often filled with very steep mountains to climb, though it’s been worthwhile and meaningful to ensure patients have access to timely innovations. #AGHE Accelerating Global Health Equity
