African Bank wins at the Gender Mainstreaming Awards. We are delighted to announce that African Bank has won both categories ‘Women Empowerment in the Workplace Award’ and the ‘Individual category for Inclusive Leader Award’ at the 12th Africa and Middle East Gender Mainstreaming Awards. The Women Empowerment in the Workplace category seeks to recognise companies that have advanced women through various programmes, while successfully transforming corporate policies, behaviour and practices. Our Chief Transformation & Sustainability Officer, Edna Sathekga-Montse, was named and won the Inclusive Leader Individual category for her sponsorship of others, leadership that recognises the provable benefits of diversity, with a special emphasis on gender. This win is affirmation of the passionate work we continue to do advance lives, sustaining the audacious spirit in our people, and driving positive change through audacious actions. We are dedicated to empowering individuals and enriching the communities we serve. This prestigious recognition is proof that our work, and our vision of a bank for the people, by the people, serving the people, resonates in the hearts and minds of South Africans at every level of our society. #AfricanBank #AudacityToBelieve #AudaciousLeaders

Last night, African Bank hosted an exclusive event to celebrate the launch of Black Pioneers: The Untold Stories of African Merchants. This book, written by Phakamisa Ndzamela and published through Rockhopper Books, is a poignant insight into the lives and achievements of South Africa’s unsung economic heroes – the pioneering black entrepreneurs who fought for financial inclusion during the Apartheid era. They say history is written by the victors. In capturing a piece of our history, it became evident that we were victorious all along. The entrepreneurs in this book deserve their place in history because their story is timeless. These were highly accomplished people, men and women of incredible courage, wisdom, and staggering reserves of endurance. They would not be denied, not by legislation, or backward attitudes, or injustice. At African Bank, we believe we have inherited a tremendous legacy, one that can inspire real change in the economic realities of those who still find themselves on the sidelines of the economic playing field. We believe that an economic renaissance lies in the hands of entrepreneurs, the people often referred to as the heartbeat of our economy, but who nonetheless struggle to gain the foothold that will help them to hoist themselves and their communities out of poverty. Our founders believed this, even during the height of Apartheid. They possessed not only the audacity to believe in their own abilities, but the audacity to believe in their people. The true power of their story, and the stories of the heroes described in this book, is that it will inspire in our people, an audacity to believe that they are the authors of a prosperous new chapter in the story of our nation. #AfricanBank #AudaciousLeaders #AudacityToBelieve

The African Bank Soweto Marathon is just days away. The Soweto Marathon is much more than a sporting event. It is deeply connected to African Bank's roots, which trace back to 1964 to the Orlando Community Hall, where our vision of a bank for the people, by the people, serving the people, was born. We are passionate about financial inclusion, and helping people and communities to uplift themselves through sustainable business growth. On Tuesday, we backed the community of Soweto by assisting with the refurbishment of small businesses through painting and the donation of items to help the businesses operate. We supported a spaza shop, tyre shop and hair salon. Entrepreneurship is close to our hearts at African Bank and is aligned to the Sustainability Lever of our Excelerate25 Strategy. Our bank was founded by black businessmen with just R70, at a time when black South Africans had no access to funding. Our humble beginnings inspire us to back entrepreneurs who today have the audacity to believe in their audacious goals and, at the same time, serve their communities. The African Bank Soweto Marathon will take place this Sunday, 3 November, at Nasrec. #ThrowbackThursday #ABSM24 #AfricanBank #AudacityToBelieve

📢 Celebrating 20 Years of YLED! | #YLED2024Graduation On October 26th, I had the profound honor of delivering the keynote at the #YLED2024 #Graduation #Ceremony, celebrating 20 years of a movement that has empowered, uplifted, and inspired over 20,000 young leaders across South Africa. 🌍   From humble beginnings in Dobsonville, YLED has become a beacon of transformation, challenging young minds to excel academically and embrace leadership, entrepreneurship, and resilience. YLED is more than a program—it’s a movement rooted in purpose, igniting confidence, and nurturing black excellence. 🖤✨   As someone who began this journey from a small town with big dreams, my story reflects the power of resilience and shared value. During my address, I saw that same resilience in the Class of 2024—leaders ready to change their communities and inspire the world. 🌟   💪 To the graduates, I shared: Your journey has just begun! Believe in your potential, create opportunities, measure success by your impact, and always lead with humility. Together, let’s build a brighter future for all.   A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has contributed to YLED’s journey—the dedicated team, partners GIBS Business School (Gordon Institute of Business Science) Themba Makamo African Bank Edna Montse, and alumni Daine Butler Keamogetswe Mabeba CA(SA) Keagile Makgoba Ashith James CA(SA) Palesa Lepule Tebang Ntsasa who have championed this cause over two decades. Saturday was a celebration of our shared commitment to uplifting the next generation of African leaders. 💼🎓   Together, let’s continue to lead with purpose and build a future rooted in shared success and social impact. 🌍✨ If you’d like to explore more about this journey, grab a copy of Rising from the Township: https://lnkd.in/dXM5-Hdw – Inspiring Stories of South African Entrepreneurs and read the chapter titled “You Should Not Have Turned Out This Way.” My journey with YLED has been transformative, and I hope it inspires you as it has inspired me.   #YLED20Years #YouthEmpowerment #Leadership #BlackExcellence #PurposeDriven #DrStevenZwane #GraduationDay #FutureLeaders #Entrepreneurship Faith Moeletsane Thabo Isaac Serame MMBD,PDM, Lean Kanban,BA Honors Thando Zwane Siyanda Ndebele GIBS Business School Durham University Business School Canon Collins Trust University of Zululand Konehali Gugushe Lerato Mahlasela Dr Bongani Mageba, PhD
