Robotic inspection tools incorporate their own power source or drive units and are used in particular when accessibility is poor or when extreme conditions prevail that make a conventional inspection impossible or only possible at high risk or expense. We have three examples in our backpack where robotic technologies can make a real difference: The integrity of the tank bottom is a major concern for #storagetanks, and they often return to service for years after inspection. Our TBIT Ultra service can accurately size the smallest metal loss defects and can be used in restricted areas, such as below heating coils and pipework, using a #remote tank bottom scanner. By contrast, sometimes a good overview can be necessary: #DroneInspection is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method that utilizes #ultrasonic testing (UT) and visual and thermal inspections to evaluate areas in #tanks, #piping systems, chimneys, and other installations that are challenging or hazardous to access due to obstacles or heights. Drone inspections overcome the technical and physical limitations of conventional methods and are also effective for cleaning and maintenance tasks such as coating repair, rust removal, and painting. Now, what if a #pipeline is considered 'unpiggable' for various reasons, including single access and limited pumping abilities? The inspection of these pipelines is made possible using our UT bi-directional self-propelled tethered inspection unit. The tether, robotic crawler, and #sensor carrier come together to allow the unit to travel both forward and backward through bends for up to 24 km (14.9 mi), consistently showing valuable high-resolution data to the operator in real time. The bi-directional capability is achieved by adapting the sensor carrier, electronics, and data-storage modules into lightweight, low-friction modules on wheels and combining them with a powerful wheel-driven crawler. The tether supplies electrical power to the tool, bringing the collected #data to the control unit at the launching site, allowing for remote steering of the crawler, and acting as a means for recovery in emergencies. The Time-of-Flight-Diffraction (TOFD) UT technology for this solution can be calibrated for axial and circumferential #featuredetection. Congratulations to our colleagues who won the Best Paper Award at IPCE - International Pipeline Conference and Exhibition 2024. In a field of 345 technical papers at IPC 2024, Kevin Siggers, Xiang Peng, Mark Wright, and Johannes Palmer were recognized for their paper “Data Fusion of Complementary Axial and Circumferential Magnetic Flux Leakage Inline Inspections and Effects on Safe Remaining Life”. The selection was based on originality, engineering significance, completeness, acknowledgment of work by others, organization, clarity, and graphic quality. As part of the 32nd #FED Conference in Ulm, Germany, the 'Fachverband Elektronikdesign und -fertigung e. V. ' (professional organization for electronics design and manufacturing) presented the prestigious #PCB Design Awards for the seventh time. The award recognizes #component designers for excellent work in three different categories. Our colleague Udo Cochet (left) was honored by the jury in the category '3D/Construction Space'. PCB (Printed Circuit Board) design is a crucial step in electronics development that enables the physical realization of a circuit. This involves the arrangement of components and the connection through conductive paths in order to transmit electrical signals. A key challenge is to design the circuit in such a way that problems such as signal interference, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and thermal stress are avoided. In high-frequency circuits in particular, the conductor paths must be precisely dimensioned and positioned to minimize signal losses. Udo has designed a data acquisition unit consisting of four stacked components, which is used in our #inspectiontools. It records and stores sensor data on anomalies and defects. The data acquisition unit is integrated into a modular, #electromechanical system and, therefore, has clear mechanical specifications. This meant special requirements for the PCB design in terms of construction space. "There was a lot to consider with this component and the design repeatedly presented me with challenges. These requirements will be proposed as the basis for a new exception chapter in the ASME B31.8 code, predicated on the latest technological advancements and best practices for the safe transportation of #hydrogen and hydrogen blends in #pipelines.
