Color-optimized solar modules to combine crop growth and energy production

Info

Agricultural greenhouses are key toward a sustainable food supply, however they have significant energetic needs due to heating and artificial lightening. There is a push from governments, retailers and consumers to reduce carbon footprint of greenhouses. Voltiris enables double-use of large greenhouses surfaces to produce electricity without impacting their high agricultural yield. Voltiris introduces a solar panel design to generate electricity from the part of sunlight's spectrum that is unused for crop growth.

Highest energy yield ⚡ ever reached for a crop-compatible agrivoltaic system? A few weeks ago, the Voltiris team achieved to reach a peak power of 145 Wp/m2 for its innovative greenhouse solar modules. Why is this a breakthrough in the agrivoltaics field ? 1/ The Voltiris modules have been tested and validated in greenhouse settings over the most light-demanding crops (tomatoes, pepper, cucumbers...). For these crops, the rule of thumb is "1% light loss is 1% yield loss". In comparison, reaching 145Wp/m2 would require a ~70% light loss when using standard checkerboard APV technologies, which decreases too much the agronomical yield to be economical. This was made possible thanks to our fruitful collaboration with 3M who has been supplying us perfect dichroic filters, that could separate effectively the wavelengths reaching the crops from the ones used for generating power. 2/ No similar spectrally-filtering low-concentration agrivoltaics system have reached such a high efficiency in the past. This efficiency could only be reached thanks to the team dedication to get the perfect optical and mechanical design of the dichroic-based concentrator. In Low-Concentration PV systems, every details count, and small errors in the optical system can be detrimental to the system efficiency. I can't wait to see how far the dedicated Voltiris team will push further the boundaries of the agrivoltaics field, and how Voltiris will keep contributing to the electrification and decarbonization of the greenhouse industry.

Today, I will be presenting as part of a panel 🍅 ⚡ on "The Battle Between Solar Panels and Plants: Yield or Watts?" on the technology stage of the GreenTech together with Egon Janssen, Luuk Graamans and Bas Oudshoorn at 12:00 pm (06/12). I will mainly present Voltiris innovative solar modules for glass greenhouses, and Bas Oudshoorn will present the latest agronomic results of our pepper trials at Delphy in Bleiswijk (NL). If you cannot attend our panel, feel free to pass by our booth 03.449 in the Renewable Hub.

'Meet the Team Series' Introducing Xavier Da Costa, our Head of Operations! Please tell us about yourself: Hello! I'm Xavier Da Costa, Head of Operations at Voltiris. With an MSc in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from EPFL, along with certifications in project management and Lean Six Sigma, I've had the opportunity to work in diverse fields from academic research to multinational corporations and startups. From Portuguese roots, born and raised in Switzerland, and having worked abroad, I was influenced by different cultures and languages that I had to master. This multicultural background helps me in my everyday life and stems from my passion for learning. I am driven by a passion for innovation and a commitment to making a positive impact What are your first impressions? The team's collaborative spirit and forward-thinking mindset are truly inspiring. The impressive market response, coupled with insightful discussions with key industry leaders, has been incredibly motivating. Now, after more than a year with the team, I love the dynamic growth we’re experiencing. What motivates you about Voltiris? I'm deeply motivated by Voltiris' mission to provide our food systems with sustainable energy solutions but also to improve food production and quality. Two of the biggest challenges our generation will have to face. Contributing to a company that leverages technology to enhance sustainability and energy independence aligns perfectly with my personal and professional values. As a hands-on person, I enjoy transitioning from installation sites to pitch nights, and spending time in the office, embracing the diverse challenges and opportunities each day brings. All these opportunities have shaped me into quite the Swiss army knife—versatile and always ready for a new challenge!
