Day 3 of the #WorldTrailsConference, Emilie Comeau-Sinclair from Destination Canada kicked off the day with a powerful question: Are trails part of regenerative tourism? The conversation deepened with Trail and Tourism: Reconciliation in Action. Kylie Ruwhiu-Karawana, Managing Director at TRC Tourism, opened with a Māori song, reminding us: “If we destroy the land we love, what will our children rest upon?” She called for patience in engaging with Indigenous communities and for sharing the stories often hidden beneath the surface. Kevin Seesequasis, Director of Community & Tourism Development, Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation, reflected on Canada’s journey toward reconciliation. “Not about us without us” means including Indigenous voices—after all, they are the original stewards of the land. As Kevin Eshkawkogan, President & CEO of Indigenous Tourism Ontario, added, "Be a good neighbour!" Reconciliation is more than acknowledging the land—it’s about visiting communities, shaking hands, and building lasting relationships. The moment Kevin Seesequasis invited everyone to act, we all stood, shook hands, and felt the air fill with hope. La conversation s'est approfondie avec Sentiers et tourisme : la réconciliation en action.
