We look forward to the 2026 World Trails Conference in Perth, Australia! It was such a privilege to have the team from Outdoors WA, Trails WA, and Business Events Perth in Ottawa to do the official handoff. Stay tuned for more about our next gathering of trail experts and enthusiasts in the coming months. 🌏
Outdoors WA was privileged to have represented Western Australia in Ottawa, Canada last week with Trails WA and Business Events Perth at the #WorldTrailsConference to accept the handover from hosts #TransCanadaTrail for Western Australia to host the conference in 2026. With over 400 people from 32 countries in attendance, it was an inspiring week sharing global best practice for an industry that delivers billions in economic contribution and is providing the platform for a burgeoning tourism sector. Key themes of tourism, reconciliation, data and climate led the way. Great to have partnered with Paige Newman and Katie Stevens to sell WA in 2026 to delegates. Looking forward to partnering with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, Business Events Perth, Tourism Western Australia, Trails WA, and the wider trails and outdoors industry to deliver the #WorldTrailsConference in Western Australia in 2026. Thank you to the teams at Trans Canada Trail | Sentier Transcanadien led by Mathieu Roy and World Trails Network co-chaired by Jackie Randle and Julian Gray for putting on an amazing week. Big shoes to step into. 📸: Union Eleven Photographers

Thank you Dianne Whelan for sharing your story with us!
An amazing experience at the World Trails Conference in Ottawa this week hosted by Sentier Transcanadien Trans Canada Trail and Parks Canada. Over 400 people from over 32 countries gathered to talk about the importance of trails. For all the changes since our ancestors first stood up walking on two legs over 300,000 years ago and began moving forward, we have been walking trails. They connect us to each other, to ourselves and to nature. It was an honour to speak at the Canadian Musuem of History last night at the Gala. And the evening before, to accept the award from the World Trails Film Festival for best film in the festival. Following your heart in life takes you to different places then following your mind. And this week it brought me to a family of people who all shared the same passion for the importance of trails. Gratitude to all the people Trans-Canada Trail for the opportunity to be part of a very special week.

⚠️ Heads up: Long post, but worth the read! Day 3 of the #WorldTrailsConference, Emilie Comeau-Sinclair from Destination Canada kicked off the day with a powerful question: Are trails part of regenerative tourism? The conversation deepened with Trail and Tourism: Reconciliation in Action. Kylie Ruwhiu-Karawana, Managing Director at TRC Tourism, opened with a Māori song, reminding us: “If we destroy the land we love, what will our children rest upon?” She called for patience in engaging with Indigenous communities and for sharing the stories often hidden beneath the surface. Kevin Seesequasis, Director of Community & Tourism Development, Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation, reflected on Canada’s journey toward reconciliation. “Not about us without us” means including Indigenous voices—after all, they are the original stewards of the land. As Kevin Eshkawkogan, President & CEO of Indigenous Tourism Ontario, added, "Be a good neighbour!" Reconciliation is more than acknowledging the land—it’s about visiting communities, shaking hands, and building lasting relationships. The moment Kevin Seesequasis invited everyone to act, we all stood, shook hands, and felt the air fill with hope. A heartwarming moment filled with emotion. #RegenerativeTourism #Reconciliation #IndigenousVoices #TourismeRégénératif #VoixAutochtones World Trails Network Beardy's & Okemasis Willow Cree First Nation Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC)
