“What's kept Merck going strong for 356 years?” One of many excellent questions during our company presentation at EPFL where you “feel” innovation in science and technology on every step. It’s this younger generation’s mindset, curiosity and potential that is our source of future innovation! And it underlines why we at Merck have built a deep relation with EPFL over the years with our team of Nadia Terranova on site and dozens of interns gaining professional experience across our Swiss sites. I had the honor to also discuss some of the latest EPFL initiatives with Prof. Andrew Charles Oates (Dean of the School of Life Sciences), Prof. Nicolas Thomä, Elisa Oricchio (Associate Professor, Director ISREC) and Scarlet Schwiderski-Grosche (Executive Director, AI Center). Two really impressed me: - Swiss National AI Institute launched by ETH Zurich and EPFL to boost AI in Switzerland. Being part of the broader Swiss AI Initiative, which leverages the capabilities of the Alps supercomputer, one of the world's most powerful AI-capable supercomputers. Goal is to position Switzerland as a leading global hub for AI development and implementation. - Meditron an open-source LLM trained on high-quality medical data, including peer-reviewed medical literature and clinical practice guidelines to help guide clinical decision-making. It has shown impressive performance (i.e. reaching advanced physician level). While being cautious to mitigate the potential (and partly still unknown) risks of AI … solutions like Meditron can significantly access to quality healthcare in areas with limited healthcare infrastructure. One to follow! Thank you EPFL community Prof. Andrew Oates, Prof. Nicolas Thomä, Scarlet Schwiderski-Grosche, Elisa Oricchio, Regina Cardoso, Sabine Demerlé, Zsuzsanna Püspöki, PhD, and Fiorella Ghysais for organizing this exchange . We Merck Group are very proud of the long-standing collaboration with EPFL to advance innovation!
