 🌍 UNECE at the Sustainable Finance Forum 2024: Advancing Project Transparency and Investment Readiness At the Sustainable Finance Forum in Hamburg, Tony Bonnici, Chief of UNECE’s Cooperation and Partnership Section, presented the PIERS Methodology (Public-Private Partnerships and Infrastructure Evaluation and Rating System). This tool, developed by UNECE, evaluates infrastructure projects against the SDGs, ensuring transparency, investment readiness, and alignment with sustainability goals. Why PIERS Matters⁉ - Global Reach: Since its launch, PIERS has assessed over 220 projects from 50+ countries, providing governments and investors with a rigorous, SDG-compliant evaluation framework. - Supporting Investment: The tool enhances projects' credibility and attractiveness, helping member States mobilize capital for infrastructure development in key areas like green energy, transport, and water management. 💡 Tony highlighted how PIERS is not just a scoring tool but a means to foster sustainable and inclusive growth. 🌍  UNECE at the Sustainable Finance Forum 2024: Expanding Investment Pathways At the Sustainable Finance Forum in Hamburg, Dario Liguti, Director of Sustainable Energy at UNECE, joined Panel 2: Financial Pathways for Energy Transition, moderated by Sagarika Chatterjee (Climate Finance, Climate Champions). The discussion focused on mobilizing capital and advancing investment-ready projects in developing and transition economies. Dario emphasized the Regional Platforms for Climate Projects, a joint initiative by UNECE, the Climate Champions, and other UN Regional Commissions. Engaging over 200 financiers, it connects capital to climate projects, demonstrating successful investments and addressing scaling challenges. The platform has identified 450+ climate projects, with 19 already securing $1.9 billion in funding. It facilitates investor matchmaking and project readiness through regional events, ensuring visibility and support for these opportunities. 🌍 Digital Technologies: Accelerating the Global Energy Transition  At the 2024 Vienna Energy Security Dialogue, organized by the World Energy Council Austria and the OSCE, Branko Milicevic, Economic Affairs Officer at UNECE, outlined how digital technologies are transforming energy systems. During Panel IV, he highlighted UNECE’s Task Force on Digitalization of Energy and the role of AI, ML, and DL in optimizing grids, supporting renewable integration, and improving market efficiency. � Why AI Matters: - Grid Optimization: AI manages the growing complexity of grids integrating storage, solar, EV infrastructure, and hydrogen technologies. - Industrial Transformation: AI helps manage energy supply, storage and use, so that renewable energy can replace fossil fuels in high-temperature applications - Synthetic Data: Provides a practical solution for data-scarce regions, enabling tailored energy models. � Key Drivers: Branko emphasized that AI's growing role is driven by the increasing complexity of energy grids, the rise of IoT technologies like sensors and smart meters providing real-time data, and the evolution of new trading models requiring efficient resource management. #EnergyTransition #UNECE #Digitalization #AI #SustainableEnergy #Innovation

🌍 UNECE Advances Just Energy Transition and Methane Emissions Reduction Efforts at IEA Conference in Baku Last week, Branko Milicevic, representing UNECE's Sustainable Energy Division (SED) and the Group of Experts on Gas, participated in Technical Session #3: Financing Action on Oil and Gas Methane at the IEA Conference in Baku. He highlighted the work of the Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane (CMM) & Just Transition (JT) and the Group of Experts on Gas, focusing on UNECE’s five Best Practice Guidance (BPG) documents. 🖇 Read more here about BPG: https://lnkd.in/gX3w-BXw 🖇 Read more about the event: https://lnkd.in/g9mVw3bz UNECE’s initiatives have evolved to support the just energy transition, promoting alternative uses of coal and gas as multi-resource platforms and sources of critical materials, such as rare earth elements (REEs). Emphasizing the importance of continued methane emissions reduction, Branko highlighted our support for developing methane-related regulations on Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) and mitigation, especially in the context of closing coal mines and the oil and gas sectors. He presented the UNECE Model Regulation for MRV (https://lnkd.in/gDFsmNk3) and the establishment of national methane emissions inventories for the gas sector. 📣 Driving Energy Efficiency in Buildings 🏛 : Key Strategies for Investment and Implementation from UNECE Insights! Today, during the High-Level Panel Discussion "Strategic Vision and Policy Interventions to Foster Investment in Energy-efficient Buildings" at the Forum in Chișinău, Moldova, UNECE Director Dario Liguti highlighted key strategies to drive energy efficiency in buildings. Drawing on UNECE's extensive experience, he emphasized that energy efficiency measures are most effective when: 🔑 Comprehensive regulatory frameworks are established, including energy efficiency standards, building codes, and market structures that support the electrification of key sectors such as heating and transport. Buildings, as integral components of future energy systems, play a pivotal role.   ⚡ Access to modern energy-efficient technologies is ensured, with implementation tailored to local conditions such as capital costs, availability, and workforce skills.   👬 Behavioral barriers are addressed to fully unlock the potential of energy efficiency solutions. 👨🎓  A national talent strategy is essential, focusing on training the future workforce, upskilling the existing one, and developing retention programs for key talents. 🌐 Bridging the digital divide is crucial, as many energy-efficient technologies depend on digital tools for their success.
