UNECE fosters sustainable development by translating #GlobalGoals into norms and conventions that impact people’s lives
Info
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) was set up in 1947 by ECOSOC. It is one of five regional commissions of the United Nations. The others are the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). Its major aim is to promote pan-European economic integration. To do so, UNECE brings together 56 countries located in the European Union, non-EU Western and Eastern Europe, South-East Europe and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and North America. All these countries dialogue and cooperate under the aegis of the UNECE on economic and sectoral issues. To this end, it provides analysis, policy advice and assistance to governments, it gives focus to the United Nations global mandates in the economic field, in cooperation with other global players and key stakeholders, notably the business community. The UNECE also sets out norms, standards and conventions to facilitate international cooperation within and outside the region. The area of expertise of the UNECE covers such sectors as: economic cooperation and integration, energy, environment, housing and land management, gender, population, statistics, timber, trade, and transport. UNECE has 56 member States. However, all interested UN member States may participate in its work. Over 70 international professional organizations and other non-governmental organizations take part in UNECE activities.

📢 As the world shifts towards cleaner and more sustainable #mobility, the #transport industry plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions. To achieve #climate goals and reduce #AirPollution, public authorities are accelerating projects to restrict the number of #vehicles with internal combustion engine in circulation and replace them with zero-emission ones. According to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA), there are 1.9 billion vehicles in use globally. Since it is not possible and economically viable for all of them to be replaced by new #electric cars, #retrofitting is emerging as a cost-effective solution that could accelerate the #energy transition and reduce our carbon footprint. Retrofitting is a mechanical operation where the petrol/diesel engine and fuel tank are removed and replaced with an electric motor and battery, or a #hydrogen fuel cell. Against this background, the UNECE World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) and its Working Party on Pollution and Energy (GRPE) has launched a new informal working group to develop globally harmonized provisions for electric vehicle and hydrogen fuel cell retrofit systems. Activities undertaken by the new informal working group will focus on all vehicle categories, from two- and three-wheelers to heavy duty vehicles, with initial emphasis on technological readiness and economic viability. The new UNECE informal working group is expected to deliver on harmonized requirements for targeted vehicle categories and powertrain types by 2027. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dR5DbB3N Dmitry Mariyasin François Cuenot European Commission Delegation of the European Union to the UN and other international organisations in Geneva Germany in the UN Représentation permanente de la France auprès de l'ONU à Genève Permanent Mission of Sweden to the United Nations in New York UK Mission Geneva The International Motor Vehicle Inspection Committee Lamberto Ventimiglia Hannie Meesters Régis Farret Arne Zielonka Eliane Massera Jane Peters Julie Abraham Pieter Looijestijn

🌍💧Guinea Bissau Takes a Major Step Forward in Water Cooperation! On 26-27 March 2025, Guinea Bissau validated its National Implementation Plan of the Water Convention, marking a critical milestone for sustainable water management in the region. As Minister of Natural Resources, His Excellency Malam Sambu, stated: "80% of the drinking water available to the population of Bissau comes from a shared aquifer—the Bassin Aquifère Sénégalo Mauritanien. Cooperation with our neighbors is therefore crucial." Guinea Bissau shares much of its water resources—including the Rio Geba, Rio Corubal, and key aquifers—with neighboring Senegal and Guinea. With climate change, urbanization, and pollution placing increasing pressure on these resources, strengthening water governance at both national and transboundary levels is essential. The validated plan, developed with the support of the Water Convention secretariat, addresses these challenges by: ✅ Enhancing water resource monitoring to prevent and manage transboundary impacts. ✅ Updating legal frameworks and strengthening institutions for better water governance. ✅ Identifying opportunities for technical and financial support to ensure sustainable implementation. The workshop brought together key stakeholders, including sectoral ministries, the United Nations system, the EU, Portugal, and IUCN’s regional office, fostering collaboration to achieve shared goals. #WaterCooperation #Sustainability #GuineaBissau #WaterConvention #TransboundaryWaterManagement Komlan Sangbana, Ph.D Julien Favier Sonja Köppel Francesca Bernardini Marco Keiner United Nations Economic Commission for Europe

🔔 With its 78 Contracting Parties and electronic procedure (#eTIR), the UNECE-serviced #TIRConvention is a flagship international agreement that establishes a global #customs #transit system that facilitates speedy and secure border crossing of #goods. As of 1 April 2025, #Iraq will become the 66th country to operationalize the TIR system, making the #transport of goods more efficient, streamlined and reliable, and boosting connectivity and #trade across #CentralAsia, #MiddleEast and #Europe. “The activation of the TIR system in Iraq will open up routes across the Middle East and make almost the entire Eurasian landmass – from China through Central Asia to Europe – TIR operational,” noted UNECE Executive Secretary Tatiana Molcean. “Most importantly, by ensuring greater connectivity between regional and international markets, it will help to boost trade and #development.” 🔎 https://lnkd.in/dt_uhD6z Dmitry Mariyasin Permanent Mission Of The Republic of Iraq to the UN Abdul karim HASHIM MOSTAFA konstantinos Alexopoulos Jonathan Valdes Roel Janssens Christine Seifert United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) IRU United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs UN Sustainable Development Group Iraqi News
