  • Organized by the Hong Kong Design Centre the DFA Design for Asia Awards 2024 recently announced its winners. 🏆 We‘re thrilled to share that Sanya Wellness Retreat, designed by Neri&Hu has been honored with the Grand Award in the Hospitality & Leisure Space category. Neri&Hu draws inspiration from the ancient Chinese walled city. Elevated on a heavy plinth, it exudes a sense of security and stability, typically surrounded by water for protection. The design tries to embody the genius loci of Hainan, to blend elements from the island’s collective memory, culture and natural features. Since 2003, the Hong Kong Design Centre has presented the DFA Awards to highlight the critical role of designers in society, celebrating design leadership and outstanding projects with significant impact and commercial success in Asia. These awards honor design solutions that improve quality of life and inspire future design development. • We are thrilled to share that The Sukhothai Shanghai designed by Neri&Hu is honored to be named the #1 hotel in China by Condé Nast Traveler UK and ranked #2 in Shanghai and #3 in China by Condé Nast Traveler. The Sukhothai Shanghai evokes the pleasure and peace one has when immersed in nature, but it is not another clichéd call to return to nature. It is a conscious design contingent upon an existing tower structure, its set limitations and the urban conditions that we attempt to mediate. Any urban traveller or city dweller would understand the preciousness of an urban fortress that protects that piece of quiet introspection that is often lacking in bustling cities. Condé Nast Traveller is a prestigious travel magazine renowned for its luxury and lifestyle insights. It evaluates and selects destinations based on factors like exclusivity, service quality, and unique experiences, offering readers curated recommendations for travel, dining, and accommodations, ensuring a sophisticated exploration of the world‘s finest offerings. • We want to thank farshid moussavi for including Neri&Hu Design and Research Office in the exhibition titled “Architecture as an instruction-Based Art” at Harvard University Graduate School of Design Druker Design Gallery during the Fall 2024 semester. The exhibition highlights the unique contributions architects make toward realizing a building and its diverse architectural qualities. We submitted the Nantou City Guesthouse - as part of the exhibition. Construction in the Nantou urban village is often a collective, grassroots effort. Contrary to a linear, top-down sequence of realization, acts of surveying, designing, and removing/building form a continuous feedback loop throughout our active involvement onsite. “Coordination” in the absence of documents is no less generative or collaborative; instead, the site conditions and their transformations produce the drawings, not the reverse. This axonometric drawing shares the self-renewing qualities of the project’s urban village surroundings, and suggests not a finality but ongoing dialogues and evolutions. • 🏆🏆🏆 We are pleased to announce that Neri&Hu Design and Research Office has been selected as the 12th Annual Architizer A+ Awards 2024 Jury Winner in the ”Best Adaptive Reuse and Renovation Firm“ category!  “Adaptive Reuse” has always been one of the themes we have explored as a practice – using material contrast, tectonic differentiation, formal assemblage and surgical grafting to deal with old and new. However, each project comes with its own set of unique issues related to how one engages a tumultuous concession-era heritage, resistance to the commercialization of faux historical relics, and the role of representation in the dialectics between past and present. This was equally relevant when we started the practice 18 years ago as this was the conditions we have to deal with and continue to be in the forefront of our discourse. We believe in the subtext over the obvious and the poetic over the utilitarian. There are issues that we always explore such as issues like layering, transparency, texture, framing and materiality. Questions of culture and aesthetic philosophy concern us deeply and we also want to relate what we do to the everyday and the public. These explorations allow us to respond to the problems of this era. Meanwhile, our Qujiang Museum of Fine Arts Extension by Neri&Hu has been selected as the Winner in the “Museum” category at the Architizer A+ Awards 2024!
