We create happy and adventurous places.

Over ons

MVRDV was set up in 1993 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries. MVRDV engages globally in providing solutions to contemporary architectural and urban issues. A research based and highly collaborative design method engages experts from all fields, clients and stakeholders in the creative process. The results are exemplary and outspoken buildings, urban plans, studies and objects, which enable our cities and landscapes to develop towards a better future. Early projects by the office, such as the headquarters for the Dutch Public Broadcaster VPRO and WoZoCo housing for the elderly in Amsterdam lead to international acclaim. MVRDV develops its work in a conceptual way in which the changing conditions are visualised and discussed through designs, sometimes literally through the design and construction of a diagram. The office continues to pursue its fascination for and methodical research on density using a method of shaping space using the complex amounts of data that accompany contemporary building and design processes. The work of MVRDV is exhibited and published worldwide and has received numerous international awards. Seventy architects, designers and other staff develop projects in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative design process which involves rigorous technical and creative investigation. MVRDV works with BIM and has official in-house BREEAM and LEED assessors. Together with Delft University of Technology, MVRDV runs The Why Factory, an independent think tank and research institute providing an agenda for architecture and urbanism by envisioning the city of the future.

From concrete to community! What if we transformed overlooked urban spaces into lush parks, vibrant community hubs, or even floating gardens? 🌱🏙️   As part of Bangkok Design Week, PROMPT PARK explored the potential of an unused space beneath Bangkok’s Sirat Expressway. Together with We!Park, this project resulted in a series of AI-generated visions that reimagine the space, shaped by input from the public and local professionals.   From vibrant food markets and green oases to public learning spaces and co-working hubs, the results highlight the many ways these overlooked areas could be repurposed to benefit the city and its people.   In collaboration with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Thailand, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Expressway Authority of Thailand, and Creative Economy Agency, PROMPT PARK envisions a future where Bangkok’s leftover spaces become vital parts of its green and blue infrastructure. By tapping into collective creativity, participatory urban design can help shape more inclusive, sustainable public spaces. 📷 We!Park

  • We’re in the Haus! 💛🏠 Our project HAUS 1 will be featured in the 26th edition of the “da! Architektur in und aus Berlin” exhibition. Organised by the Architektenkammer Berlin, it is one of sixty outstanding projects selected by an independent jury. HAUS 1 is the transformation of a dated office building into an eye-catching entrance building at Berlin’s Atelier Gardens. Originally plain white but now bright yellow, the transformed building is completed with a new living roof, with a sustainable timber rooftop pavilion and terrace, accessible via a grand external staircase. HAUS 1 hosts adaptive work and meeting spaces across four floors. The exhibition showcases exemplary solutions to current architectural challenges, all designed and realised by members of the Berlin Chamber of Architects. These projects reflect a diverse, multi-faceted, and socially and ecologically responsible planning culture. • How can we shift to materials that minimise carbon impact in our designs? 🌍 Join our project leader Ana Melgarejo López at the Ecole nationale supérieure d'architecture de Saint-Etienne ENSASE on March 17 to find out! Ana will share first-hand insights into how collaboration on the Lake Side-masterplan at Tour & Taxis in Brussels has advanced sustainable practices, showcasing how innovative materials and design approaches can reduce carbon impact. Ana will explain how with – together with our Climate and NEXT teams – we facilitated a move from an entirely concrete construction to materials that reduce carbon emissions while the design remained feasible and architecturally harmonious. • This is the LuLa Light Mall – an open-air, porous shopping centre stimulating outdoor living – in the Luxelakes eco-city of Chengdu! Inspired on the surrounding nature, the design takes the shape of a loose stack of boxes with openings between them. This results in large terraces, walkways, and staircases to enjoy the local climate and views on the neighbouring lake – allowing visitors to blend shopping with nature. 🛍️🌿   The project comprises two main elements: a 19-storey tower and a four-storey plinth. Instead of a typical, enclosed mall typology, the plinth breaks apart commercial units into smaller boxes and stacks them to allow light, air, views, and people in the gaps in between. Besides creating many outdoor spaces for visitors, this approach also reduces the cooling requirements of the project, lowering the amount of required energy.   The tower keeps in with the neighbouring high-rises of the city, while large deviations are found on its lower levels, so that the tower blends with the more loosely arranged boxes of the plinth.   The commercial spaces are versatile with various sizes and with different views and connections. As a result, these spaces can accommodate a huge variety of different commercial activities: shops, restaurants, cafés, bars, spas, salons, and gyms can all find a comfortable home alongside nature here.   The LuLa Light Mall is currently under construction. 🚧 Read more on the project here! https://lnkd.in/eETvm5US

  • "Fresh, bold, and funky" That's what ARTE is calling the depot! In their series Temples of Culture, they visited Rotterdam to check out the world's first fully accessible art storage facility. 🎨   Including an interview with Winy Maas, they explore how the design of the building – with its façade of mirrored panels – gives back to the surrounding park and Rotterdam's skyline, and how the rooftop forest creates more green space while densifying the city. 🌳🏙️   Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, located in Rotterdam's Museumpark, offers a glimpse behind the scenes of the museum world and makes the whole art collection accessible to the public. It features exhibition halls, a rooftop forest, and a restaurant, in addition to an enormous amount of storage space for art and design. 📺 Watch the episode of Temples of Culture with the depot here! https://lnkd.in/eTYfc7Aa Cc Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen | Gemeente Rotterdam | Rotterdam Partners 📸 Ossip van Duivenbode | Aad Hoogendoorn

  • It is with deep sadness that we heard the news of the passing of our former colleague, Nicolas Lee, at the age of only 35 after his battle with cancer. Nicolas was an exceptional architect whose creativity and dedication made a great impression. Nicolas Lee, was a visionary Chinese-Canadian architect and founding partner of Other Projects. His designs graced institutions like Brown University and Fondazione Prada. Nicolas's career included contributions at esteemed firms such as OMA, REX, and HWKN. For us, he worked on the project for Zaryadye Gardens, among others. He will be remembered for his talent, kindness, and passion for design. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working with him.

  • With climate change accelerating sea level rise, we need to rethink how we design coastal cities. Instead of resisting water, how can we integrate it into our urban environments? On 6 March, our associate Maria Stamati will join the "Cities on the Frontline" speaker series, organised by the Resilient Cities Network. In an online panel, she will present insights from our Sea Level Rise Catalogue, exploring adaptive strategies such as floating developments, elevated structures, and nature-based defences. 🌊🏝️ Maria will be joined by Arnoud Molenaar (Square Floating City) and host Fitsum A. Gelaye, MCP (Resilient Cities Network) to discuss the future of coastal infrastructure in the face of rising water levels. Register here to join the discussion! 👉 https://lnkd.in/em4pzU5v
