Uncover 3 key aspects of the intervention that helps to close the education gap for over 205,000 children in conflict-affected areas through digital technology. Over the past decade, War Child Alliance’s evidence-based intervention ‘Can’t Wait to Learn’ has used digital games to transform learning for the most marginalized children. Collaboration is a key factor in their success: from developing the platform to working with local stakeholders, working together ensures cultural relevance and program sustainability so education reaches the most remote places. Co-creation is the cornerstone of effective learning. That’s why our independent Judging Committee was pleased to see that the team behind ‘Can’t Wait to Learn’ at War Child Alliance works alongside children and teachers in the regions they serve. “Perhaps most importantly,” Dorothy Gordon, head of our Yidan Prize for Education development judging panel, says of our 2024 laureates Mark Jordans, Marwa Zahr, and Luke Stannard, “they’re working very closely in partnership with local authorities and ministries of education to make sure that the educational offering is actually aligned to the national curriculum.” It’s these “feedback loops,” Dorothy explains, that make Can’t Wait to Learn a truly “winning solution.” Through the power of co-creation, students in conflict-affected regions around the world are able to build fundamental literacy and math skills with digital games. The United Nations reports that nearly 120 million girls are out of school globally. We’re proud to support CAMFED - Campaign for Female Education, an organization seeking to change that for millions of girls and young women across sub-Saharan Africa. CAMFED’s work is rooted in the understanding that girls’ education has a ripple effect. When you educate a girl, you educate: The leader she’ll become: CAMFED has helped over 7 million children attend school in Malawi, Tanzania, Ghana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, including 2.2 million girls at secondary school. Around 95% of girls supported by the organization say they feel more prepared to shape and attain their life goals. The next generation of changemakers: The CAMFED Association is a network of first-gen graduates who are addressing key issues in their communities like poverty and child marriage as educators, leaders, and advocates. The planet: Girls’ education has been found to have a disproportionate impact on major global challenges, such as climate change and social justice concerns. 11 October is the International Day of the Girl Child. Let’s celebrate by reflecting on the powerful impact of girls’ education for schools, communities, and tomorrow’s leaders. What [Wolfgang] Lutz has added to the field is understanding the difference that education makes to this.” Andreas Schleicher, head of our Education Research judging panel In a recent interview with Andreas Schleicher, he shares why he believes Wolfgang Lutz offers such a unique approach to demography — and makes such a provocative case for the importance of investing in education.
