Werner von Siemens Prizes 2024: Michael Foltýn wins the 3rd place in the Best Master's Thesis Category🏆 For the third decade, Siemens has been recognizing talented students, inspiring educators, and passionate scientists. This year, CEITEC - Central European Institute of Technology Brno University of Technology boasts with several students recognised for their exceptional theses🚀 3rd place in the Best Master’s Thesis category was awarded to PhD candidate Michael Foltýn, who studied at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Brno University of Technology and is now part of CEITEC BUT. His thesis, Plasmonics of Non-Precious Metals, compared the properties of non-precious metals like bismuth, indium, lead, and aluminum with traditional plasmonic metals like gold. Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming twelve pharmacy students from Croatia and the Czech Republic as part of the EPSA Twinnet Project exchange programme (EPSA - European Pharmaceutical Students' Association). The group included master's students from the University of Zagreb / Sveučilište u Zagrebu and Masaryk University 🎓 During their visit, they explored how a modern research centre operates, the crucial role of cutting-edge technology in scientific progress, and why CEITEC - Central European Institute of Technology is an ideal place to kick-start a research career. By combining state-of-the-art facilities with innovative leadership, we offer not only excellent research, but also internationally renowned PhD programmes. A Day (or two) in the life of a scientific Editor – CEITEC Edition 📗 A scientific career does not always mean working in a laboratory. So, what should a young researcher do if they love science but do not necessarily want to pursue it at the highest level? How can they channel their passion for science in other ways? 🥼 One option is a career as a scientific editor. But what does this role entail, and how can one prepare for it? To find out first-hand, we invited Christina Karlsson Rosenthal, Chief Editor of Communications Biology, to CEITEC - Central European Institute of Technology Masaryk University 🔬 💬 If you're thinking about becoming a scientific editor, the first thing you need is a real interest in the profession and in science. But beyond that, it's a role that comes with quite a bit of responsibility. You're the one guiding papers through the publication process, making sure they’re solid, clear, and up to the journal’s standards. Meeting Christina was an inspiring experience for young researchers exploring alternative career paths in science. Big congratulations to Jakub Vrabel, PhD! 💚 He has successfully defended his dissertation entitled "Interconnection between statistical physics and machine learning, with applications to spectroscopic data" at CEITEC - Central European Institute of Technology Brno University of Technology 🎓 The thesis explores the interplay between physics and machine learning, applying machine learning methods to advance applications in the physical sciences, particularly spectroscopy, and employing concepts from statistical physics to study deep neural networks as objects of scientific interest. Besides providing novel insights into understanding neural network behaviors, it also develops practical, physics-inspired ML techniques.   Jakub is currently applying for postdoctoral fellowships while continuing to work on applied and foundational machine learning at CEITEC.
