Gardo® Filter — Media Filtration System Far more capable than all predecessors, this innovative media filtration system is what your process needs to succeed! This robust filtration system features a durable stainless steel construction, including a direct-drive industrial pump capable of handling 1/8" solids without damaging the impeller. A Manufacturing Minute from BASF | Chemetall: THE CRUCIAL IMPORTANCE OF RTO (Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer) EFFICIENCY RTO stands for Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer, which is a type of air pollution control equipment used in manufacturing to destroy hazardous air pollutants, volatile organic compounds, and odors. It works by using heat to convert emissions into water and carbon dioxide, which are then released into the atmosphere. The process involves heating the combustion part of the RTO to a high temperature, drawing toxic gases into the machine, and then moving the toxic gasses into a regeneration column. RTOs increase energy efficiency, are cost effective, help reduce emissions, conserve resources, and minimize environmental impact. They promote sustainable industrial practices, and typically operate at temperatures ranging from 1,500°F to 1,800°F. This story is about an automaker that was experiencing filter failure in its air recycling as well as deposition in its RTO. In addition to high filter failure rate that the automaker was experiencing, they also had a problem with excessive clogging in the primary, secondary, and tertiary filters in their clear coat recycle air house. Inspections done by plant personnel showed a little water on the air house floor but clean air coming into the air house. The customer requested an audit by Chemetall experts to identify the filter issue, as the problem was not obvious. Chemetall then scheduled a weekend inspection to minimize production interruptions. Chemetall monitored the weekend cleaning and start-up protocol. Chemetall was able to determine that the start-up and chemical treatment protocols were causing the plant to start-up under an upset condition. This was causing initial foaming and high velocity air to coat the filters. Chemetall suggested and implemented a new protocol, and once the plant had run for a few hours, the foaming went away and everything began to function normally. New chemical treatment start-up protocols were installed, filter life was extended, and the filter failure stopped. An estimated annual savings of $138,000 in filter costs were realized. A Manufacturing Minute from BASF | Chemetall: INCREASING SUSTAINABILITY BY REDUCING TOXICITY Improvements in sustainability are often acquired through resource reduction, saving water, energy, or cost. Another road to sustainability is to replace an old technology with innovative new technologies that reduce toxicity. For example, Chemetall has introduced a family of Silane and Zirconium Advanced Pretreatments, Oxsilan® and Gardobond®. Both are phosphate-free game-changers containing no heavy metals, operating at ambient temperatures, and producing virtually no sludge, while providing performance equal or better performance than conventional iron and zinc phosphates. Today we are discussing an automotive components company located in Belgium that manufactures windshield wipers from single components up to final assembled parts. The assembly is completely automated and therefore has a high demand on clean parts. The metal brackets were stamped and formed with low viscous hydrocarbons, or solvents. The coated and galvanized springs were bent with the same fluid. After an Environmental, Health, & Safety audit, the company decided to move away from the solvent based drawing oils as they are considered carcinogenic. The most immediate requirement was to remove the product in the surface treatment application. Chemetall, with its global reputation as a leading supplier of applied surface treatments and process innovation, was able to tap into their expertise and broad portfolio to make the search for a suitable solution easier. After analysis of the local situation with the incumbent products, Chemetall recommended a solvent free technology with a much lower viscosity and a higher flashpoint that was also oxidation stable. The material would be left on the parts formed and stamped, reducing process steps. The solution was Tech Lube 5E, a vegetable based low viscous technology. Tech Lube 5E had been previously introduced and tested in the various applications on spring bending machines and presses. Final approval obtained after successful testing with the automatic assembly line as well pretreatment applications.
