#Chile is one of only a handful of countries to earn an "Almost sufficient" rating. It has made considerable progress on climate action, with a rapid rate of #renewables expansion, and its #coal phase-out plan is going faster than anticipated. However, the impact of Chile’s coal phase-out could be lessened if it results in higher fossil gas consumption from planned reconversions. Eight coal-fired units have yet to make a retirement commitment: they're not obliged to stop operating until 2040. Summary: https://bit.ly/CAT_CHI Full policy update: https://lnkd.in/gmNfTTHe

Independent science-based assessment tracking country pledges, measuring them against the agreed 1.5˚C warming limit.
Info
The Climate Action Tracker (CAT) is an independent scientific analysis produced by Climate Analytics and NewClimate Institute. We track progress towards the globally agreed aim of holding warming well below 2°C, and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C. CAT quantifies and evaluates climate change mitigation commitments, and assesses, whether countries are on track to meeting those. It then aggregates country action to the global level, determining likely temperature increase by the end of the century. CAT also develops sectoral analysis to illustrate required pathways for meeting the global temperature goals.

COUNTRY ANALYSIS: #India is seeing a rapid rise in energy demand from both GDP growth (essential for a developing economy) & demand for cooling amid heatwaves. Despite substantial renewable energy capacity progress, energy demand isn’t decoupling from emissions. * #coal production & imports hit record high first half of 2024 in another year of record summer heat, despite renewables + storage is becoming cost-effective compared to fossil fuels. * Coal power expansion not 1.5˚C aligned. * Non-fossil energy sources account for 46% of India's total installed capacity: this indicates the country is well on track to achieve its conditional NDC target of 50% non-fossil capacity ahead of schedule. * This progress suggests India could set a more ambitious NDC target with international support. We've done a special report on #COP29 host Azerbaijan's #climate action. The results are not good: after it weakened its #NDC by removing its 2030 #climate target altogether, & pledged to increase fossil fuel production (& with it, methane), we rate AZE's climate action as "Critically Insufficient" Full report here ==> bit.ly/CAT_AZE_special

COUNTRY ANALYSIS: #China’s 2023 emissions reached an all-time high due to economic activity & fossil fuel consumption rebound post COVID. While China's emissions could peak before 2025, but at a higher level; it's not yet clear if they're already declining from the 2023 peak Summary ==> https://bit.ly/CAT_CHN The earlier peak is down to rapid rollout of renewables, driving down fossil fuel power. China has surpassed its NDC target for wind & solar six years ahead of schedule. Non-fossil power generation capacity now exceeds fossil fuels. #Coal remains China’s primary energy & largest emissions source While coal power permits dropped by 83% in the first half 2024, new coal plant construction still high from surge in 2022-23 approvals. Utilisation rates nevertheless declining. Rating remains “Highly insufficient” See our Policies and action page for the detail across sectors. ==> https://lnkd.in/d_wGifEM

BLOG: we've analysed #Indonesia's second #NDC draft, which outlines its updated #climate goals. While there are some encouraging signs, we also found several red flags. We'vve submitted this analysis to the government's consultation. https://lnkd.in/gWtcUkAa

Next updated country analysis: #Singapore. Despite a stronger 2022 #climate target, Singapore's emissions continue to rise. Target is 131% higher than 1.5˚C compatible modelled pathways & 🇸🇬 projected to overachieve it. Our rating is "Highly insufficient" but its NDC needs to be stronger LINKS: Summary page https://bit.ly/CAT_SIN Policies https://lnkd.in/g6YsHJfs Singapore is moving on #renewables with a new SGD 5bn Future Energy Fund. Is on-track to meet target of importing 4 GW of “low carbon” electricity by 2035, expected to meet ~30% of demand. But 🇸🇬 is doubling down on fossil gas for electricity generation.

🇨🇦 New country analysis: as its forests burn, #Canada’s pace of #climate action appears to be moving at a glacial pace: its EV sales mandate is the only major new policy from its 2022 climate plan to be implemented. Overall rating has improved to "Insufficient". While emissions are now firmly on downward trend, implementing the full 2022 climate plan is critical to closing the gap between current policies & the 2030 climate target. Emissions from oil & gas exports are now larger than domestic; coal exports reach record high Read the summary page https://bit.ly/CAT_CAN And all the detail on the policies page https://lnkd.in/gtpfz3dD

We've taken a deep dive into the challenges facing #China, #India and the #US in decarbonising the "hard to abate" sector of iron and steel. Decarbonising this sector is fundamental to reaching net zero and meeting the Paris Agreement's #1o5C warming limit. Read it here ==> https://lnkd.in/g9N8v7Mx The specific challenges each country faces differ substantially according to the status of the steel industry and its likely future development. Determining the fastest possible speed of action therefore needs to take these challenges into account.

COUNTRY ANALYSIS: G20 and COP30 host #Brazil has reverted to its earlier, stronger NDC, with renewed investment into infrastructure, industry and the transformation of the economy. Already, forest loss has dropped. Our CAT rating remains "Insufficient". Read the full country update ➡ https://bit.ly/CAT_BRA However, President Lula has no timeline for phasing out fossil fuels and his continued allocation of significant resources into oil and fossil gas production raises concerns about prioritisation of an energy transition More details in our "Policies & Action" tab 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eHibihpr Brazil is not on track to reach either its 2025 or 2030 targets. Emissions under current policies (excl. LULUCF) have essentially plateaued, expected to slightly grow - when they should decrease - over the rest of the decade. Brazil needs to submit a substantially stronger 2030 NDC.
