Reaction 🚨 SBTi’s plans for the net-zero standard revision may offer a promising way past the disruptive offsetting dispute After months of polarised wrangling over the potential role of offsetting for corporate climate targets, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has published two new papers which shed light on the future direction of its standards. Some positive developments we set out in our reaction blog: 1️⃣ The Scope 3 Discussion Paper sets out a framework to encourage and enable companies to focus more on critical emission sources through transition-specific alignment targets, ruling out the use of carbon credits towards emission targets or as compensation for target shortfalls. 2️⃣ The Carbon Credit Synthesis Report clearly points out the ineffectiveness of allowing carbon credits to meet corporate climate targets. Reasons for caution: ⚠ The details of implementation and communication will matter. We need watertight rules on how to identify the most critical emission sources and transitions to be covered by alignment targets. ⚠ The value of these initiatives will ultimately depend on the extent to which they are protected from undue influence and pressure. With global demand for oil and natural gas on the decline, Senegal and other countries that invest heavily in developing their fossil fuel resources risk to sit on stranded assets. It's been over a month since the #EUelections2024 and this Thursday the European Parliament will decide on Ursula von der Leyen's future. While we wait for some reshuffling to take place, we have a clear climate reform "menu” for the incoming EU institutions. Amidst a strong focus on competitiveness, clashing foreign policy priorities, and domestic challenges, alongside escalating climate impacts, the EU must keep climate action firmly on the agenda, both at home and abroad. With this new EU cycle, the EU has an opportunity to solidify its role as climate leader and global competitor. In our latest report ( 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eScUYWcP ), we present reform opportunities for the 2024-2029 EU cycle to improve the mainstreaming of climate in EU external action. Reform proposals are presented along four components: ⚙ climate foreign policy strategy ⚙ strong governance ⚙ streamlined coordination and communication ⚙ sufficient resources Read the report here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eScUYWcP Or if you are short on time – go straight to the 4-pager⏱ https://lnkd.in/eYy7rukA Sarah Jackson Imogen Outlaw Lukas Kahlen Inès Paiva #EU #Diplomacy #Climate #ClimateAction #EUelections

In 2015, the Paris Agreement’s new goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C was at risk of being dead on arrival because the world was on the verge of a coal-plant-building boom. Fortunately, the boom never took off. Since then, the amount of new #coal power in development has fallen dramatically from 1,496 GW to 578 GW. Of the new coal plants in development in 2015, 56% were canceled by 2023. A new article from the #SystemsChangeLab consortium, which Climate Action Tracker and NewClimate Institute are part of, breaks down the reasons for this transformative change and explains how the world can speed up the cancelation of the remaining coal project pipeline ⤵ 🔗 https://bit.ly/3LfaOaJ
New article from our #SystemsChangeLab consortium author Joel Jaeger looks at the history of coal plant cancellations in China, India and Vietnam, finding that there have been encouraging reductions in coal project pipelines around the world: 🌏 The top 10 countries with the most coal in development — which are all located in Asia — have decreased their coal project pipeline since 2015. 🌍 9 African countries had plans in 2015 to build their first ever coal plants, but none of these had been built by the end of 2023. 🌎 0 countries in Europe or the Americas increased their coal capacity by more than one gigawatt over that time period. See what lessons can be learned to speed up the cancellation of remaining #coal projects 🔗 https://bit.ly/3LfaOaJ WRI Climate World Resources Institute Bezos Earth Fund NewClimate Institute Climate Analytics
