🔍 What challenges do our journalists face when reporting on Russia from exile?   In 2022, our DW studio in Moscow was shut down and our journalists' press accreditation was revoked. Classified as foreign agents, our team was forced to continue its work from exile in Riga, Latvia.   We asked our Bureau Chief Juri Rescheto a few questions about their work in the Riga exile studio and the challenges the journalists encounter on a daily basis.   ➡️ Swipe through!

    • "Reporting from the Riga studio is crucial for three reasons.

Firstly, many people here speak Russian and are confronted with Putin's threats. We offer a close but safe perspective on Russian affairs."

Juri Rescheto
On the importance of reporting from Riga
DW
    • "Secondly, we cover the Baltic states, whose geopolitical significance has increased tremendously since the start of the Ukraine war.

Thirdly, we send a clear political message: our voice has not been silenced despite Russia's ban."

    • "Our working conditions have become more challenging. This starts with finding protagonists: many people are afraid to give us interviews. It continues with practical issues in producing TV segments, as we no longer have our own cameramen and women."

Juri Rescheto
About reporting on Russia without a studio on location

DW
    • "But we are creative, flexible, and sometimes take unconventional paths to continue telling our stories about Russia objectively and close to the people."

DW has joined numerous European broadcasters on the platform PEACH ("Personalization for each") to enable more personalization of content.    Behind PEACH stands an advanced Recommendation Engine that supports users in finding additional content that suits them - but also in breaking out of familiar patterns and giving them new perspectives on topics through recommendations.   ℹ More info about PEACH and its collaborative European Broadcasting Union (EBU) project can be found in our press release: https://lnkd.in/gt9ks3Sp

Friday evening saw an impactful and at times emotional moment when former political prisoners Vladimir Kara-Murza, Ilya Yashin and Andrei Pivovarov spoke at a press conference at DW headquarters in Bonn, organized by the late Alexei Navalny's ANTI-CORRUPTION FOUNDATION (ACF), less than 24 hours after their unexpected release.   They spoke about their ordeal and their ongoing fight for freedom while media from all over Germany, Europe and the world gathered at DW to report live from the first press conference of the three Russian ex-prisoners.   Kara-Murza, who spent almost two and a half years in solitary confinement, said: "I was sure that I would die in Putin's prison," then added: "I didn't sign a petition for pardon, but I was still pardoned. We never gave our consent to be expelled from Russia, yet we are here... I feel and I know I will be back in my home country, and it will be much quicker than you believe."   ➡ Read our press release for more information about the event and some of the standout quotes from the evening: https://lnkd.in/em55vdZj

Can users ensure that the news really comes from a reliable source and has not been altered by, for example, AI?   Yes, they can - if certain standards are in play! That's why DW has joined the IPTC to further develop and manifest these standards in media.   Guido Baumhauer, Managing Director, Distribution, Marketing and Technology at DW: "This is a major step for us, as certifying real news as real news is how we reassure our audiences that our content is from us – and only us."   ℹ Read our press release to find out more about what the IPTC does and how its work can support independent media worldwide:
