50 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐎2 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 – ecoLocked has just crossed an important milestone 🎉 After three years of work and a few months since launching our product eLM Zero, we’ve surpassed 50 tonnes of CO2 removed!   🔍 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧? ecoLocked locks CO2 into building materials like concrete, creating a scalable and impactful 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠* use case for Biochar Carbon Removal. 🪨 This milestone means we’ve embedded 22 tonnes of eLM Zero into pavers, ready-mix concrete, and street furniture. Our recipes and material processing ensure that the carbon will stay locked-in for centuries. We’ve also... ▶️ saved 110 tonnes of sand and cement, reducing raw material extraction ▶️ developed a robust carbon accounting process for insetting, with third-party-validated LCAs 🚀 This is just the beginning. 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐮𝐞𝐬: 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥? 🌍 Biomass residues constitute one of the largest waste streams in the world. Our literature research shows that each year, at least 9 𝐠𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐫𝐲 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 are produced. 🌾Agriculture leads the way, with cereal waste making up ~4 Gt/year, followed by: 💩 Manure: ~2.5 Gt/year 🌲 Wood waste: ~1.5 Gt/year 🌰 Food processing waste: ~0.5 Gt/year What if we could use these residues as feedstock in 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥 processes and/or transform them into 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬? 🌱 As waste management is local, it is difficult to pin down the global share of “unused or ineffectively used” biomass. However, our analysis shows that up to 50% of biomass could be available for carbon removal purposes! In the DACH region plus the Netherlands and Denmark alone, forestry residues such as sawmill waste or beetle-infested dead wood make up 9.5 Mt/year - and a big part of that is currently getting burned, leading to the release of CO2. Based on the 50% estimate, for the concrete industry in this region, that would mean enough feedstock to store around 4 Mt CO2eq. per year, about the equivalent emissions of 20 M cubic meters of concrete. At ecoLocked, we aim to scale our production from 300 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 60,000 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐲 2028. 💪 Let’s not waste this opportunity. 😉 #ecoLocked #eLMZero #CarbonRemoval #Sustainability #Biochar #Biomass

🖤 Construction + biochar carbon removal (#BCR) = a match made in heaven? 🔦 Today, I am featuring ecoLocked, a German start-up on a mission to decarbonise the construction industry. As a reminder building materials alone contribute 15% of global emissions. 🏗️ Their approach focuses on integrating biochar into construction materials, enabling the creation of durable carbon sinks in the built environment. They have already sequestered 60t of CO₂  and they’re just getting started!   How does ecoLocked operate?  🪨 ecoLocked uses biochar, a carbon-rich product derived from biomass pyrolysis, which is processed and incorporated into concrete as an admix or additive, partially substituting conventional inputs like cement and aggregates. Note: no significant changes are required at the concrete production site. 🌍 This process permanently sequesters carbon within the concrete structures, creating CO₂ -negative building materials thereby reducing the net carbon footprint, sequestering an estimated 200kg of CO2/m3 of concrete. 💪 In addition to the tremendous environmental benefits, ecoLocked tailors their products to the performance needs of different concrete market segments, such as mechanical performance, weight, or insulation properties. What is ecoLocked’s carbon removal strategy?  📈 ecoLocked recognises biochar’s material properties that increase its value in a variety of contexts and aims to provide a highly-scalable market for biochar as a value-adding carbon store. 💚 They see tremendous market and CO2 impact potential incorporating biochar admixes into building materials, as gigatonnes of cement and concrete are produced each year and the current process is inherently carbon-intensive, with hard-to-abate emissions. 🤝 In a partnership with Carbonfuture tracking tools and Carbon Standards International AG certification, ecoLocked has also been piloting an end to end, trackable, trustworthy removal process. 💰 Following their €4 million seed round in June, they are expanding their R&D team and production facilities, introducing new product lines, and enhancing demand for their products. 🤩 Personally, I see biochar in concrete as one of the most high-potential options we have to scale carbon dioxide removal (#CDR). 💚 🏭  How can carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) help clean up one of the world’s dirtiest industries? 🏭💚 🤯 Cement accounts for 8% of global emissions. We produce a staggering 4,000,000,000 tons of it every year, making it the most widely used human-made material in the world. 👷 Last week I gathered with industry leaders in Madrid as part of the 2024 #CarbonZero conference to better understand where the industry stands and what role CDR can play in decarbonising it. It was so refreshing to attend an event where I did not know anyone, and where almost no one had heard of CDR. Here my key takeaways: 📈 Demand for cement is only going up, all over the world, particularly driven by the demand for AI data centers, which are huge concrete constructions popping up everywhere. 😱 The sector is already highly regulated by emission trading systems (#ETS). There was visible shock and anger at projections of the EU ETS price going from currently €70/t to around €150/t in 2030, €250 in 2035, and up to €400/t in 2040. CDR at €150-€200/t could be a competitive game changer to stabilise prices in this regard. ⚠️ Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is insanely expensive, almost doubling the CAPEX cost of a new facility at $400m/unit. It seems like there won’t be a business case for it in cement production for a while. 💩 Biochar carbon removal (#BCR) was seen as the biggest opportunity, given the massive amounts of waste biomass available in some of these supply chains. In Pakistan alone, I was told there are over 500Mt of manure waste / year - what an opportunity for BCR! 🛑 The Global South will be hit hardest by increased carbon taxes/prices. Countries such as Turkey (the world’s largest exporter of cement) might be unable to cope with carbon import taxes rising by 4-10x. While carbon taxes are the way forward, we need to plan for negative externalities on some of the world’s most vulnerable. ➡ Overall, it became very clear to me that the sector can only do so much to decarbonise. There will be significant residual emissions. Cement companies risk losing both their social license to operate and their business case if they do not embrace CDR soon. 🌟 I personally gave an intro into CDR, the market and policy, as well as highlighting the important work done by Carbonfuture, Paebbl, neustark, and ecoLocked as great examples of partners for this industry. 🙏  Special thanks to the Industry Link team around Beatrice Ene, Mai Elsomkhraty, Lobna Maged, Eyad Alenani, and Adrian Ene for putting this event together - I had learnt a lot! We made it to the finals of Bits & Pretzels 2024! And what an experience that was. 3 pitches within 4 hours with a steadily growing audience. After winning the "Solutions for #environmental & societal challenges" track, we proceeded to the playoffs, and then to the finals as one of 4 startups out of 1,600 applicants in the #EuropeanPitchContest. 🌍 And then it all culminated in a pitch on the main stage with an audience of ~2.000, speaking right after Toto Wolff (#fanboymoment). Kudos to Clearly (Danielle Walsh) and Futurail (Alex Haag) for delivering stellar pitches and to ecoplanet (Maximilian Dekorsy) to a well-deserved win of the Golden Pretzel. 🥨 Great business models taking on the hard challenges - we need many more of those. A big Thank You also to the jury Andreas Etten, Valerie B., Benjamin Erhart, Tina Dreimann, and Felix Klühr! Days like these - as exhausting as they are for an introvert 😆 - give me extra motivation and show me that we must be on the right path with ecoLocked.
