It was both an honor and a pleasure to represent Japan at the inaugural seminar of a trilateral series on cybersecurity, co-hosted by the Consulates General of Japan, Korea, and the United States at Goethe-Universität Frankfurt a. Main. This event brought together industry experts and government representatives to engage in a critical dialogue about the rapidly evolving realm of cybersecurity and the interwoven geopolitical complexities within the ICT sector. #Cybersecurity is indeed an international team sport. Currently we are witnessing unprecedented challenges and opportunities within this space, which makes collaborative discourse like this event essential for shaping strategies that can be mutually beneficial. The seminar’s keynote speech by Prof. Dr. Haya Schulmann laid an invaluable foundation for the discussion. Her insights offered a structured lens through which we could approach the current and future cybersecurity landscape and framed the urgency of the conversations that followed. In our panel discussion, it was my privilege to speak alongside Dr. So Jeong KIM, Senior Research Fellow from Korea’s Institute for National Security Strategy, and John Nix, Director of International Development at the SANS Institute. Dr. Kim provided a compelling account of Korea's cybersecurity framework, spotlighting the country’s focus on a multi-faceted approach that includes regulatory frameworks, technological advancements, and inter-agency cooperation. John Nix, in turn, shared the United States' perspective, emphasizing the need for cross-border collaboration and proactive cybersecurity training, which aligns with the U.S.'s extensive operations in the global digital arena. Cybersecurity challenges are seldom unique to a single nation. Rather, they mirror global trends, and each region’s approach can contribute to a more resilient and integrated international cybersecurity stance. As we discussed, one of the key points that emerged was the need for agile response mechanisms capable of addressing rapidly evolving cyber threats without compromising on international norms and values. In reflecting on the seminar, one can only appreciate the power of collaborative efforts like these to bridge gaps between national cybersecurity strategies and the growing need for a unified front. As emerging technologies like #AI and #Quantum reshape the ICT sector, international partnerships will become indispensable for ensuring a prosperous digital future. An absolute must read article! I can only confirm Dr. Hermann Gumpp’s point that the gap between tech users and creators is growing rapidly. It is a major (!) problem for justice and safety in our society. Tech education on all levels is necessary, but tech teachers are missing. What to do? We see the rise of investments in MOOCs (massive open online classes), but my 9 years of experience with self-paced learning and scientific evidence show that less than 10% (most 3-5%) actually make it to graduation of these online courses. Having an AI teach you tech is not a solution for most people. Especially not for already marginalised groups in our society! Robots and gamification cannot replace good teachers. #cybersecurity #cybersovereignty #DEI
