The Marshall Center conducts a variety of unique programs involving to date more than 15,000 officials from over 150 countries. All programs are taught in English. Our Seminar on Regional Security and European Security Seminar-East is presented in English and Russian simultaneous interpretation. Areas of Strategic Interest In addition to our resident courses that focus on regional and transnational topics, our strategic interests include: the Trans-Atlantic Relationship; Great Power Competition and the role of Russia and China in Europe; Ukraine Defense Reform; the Western Balkans; the nexus between European and African Security Challenges; the High North; and, the Relationship between NATO and the European Union. Our Commitment The Marshall Center contributes to security cooperation with tailored, professional education and research, dialogue, and the persistent, thorough, and thoughtful examination of issues that confront our region and the world both today and in the years ahead. 🥳CONGRATULATIONS to Marshall Center Professor Bob Knotts, College of International Security Studies, on his retirement, Professor Knotts is retiring after 5️⃣0️⃣ YEARS of combined U.S. federal civilian and military service. 🏫 During his five years of service with #GCMC, Professor Knotts, who retired from the US Army in 2002, served as lead for the Program on Countering Transnational Organized Crime. He was recognized with a meritorious civilian service award for his coordination of more than 20 in-resident, outreach, and alumni events. Professor Knotts led multiple international and Pan-American events focused on countering transnational organized crime in collaboration with the 🇮🇹 Italian Arma dei Carabinieri, 🇦🇷 Argentina’s Office of Counternarcotics, the 🇺🇾 Uruguayan National Police, the 🇧🇷 Brazilian Federal Police, and the 🇩🇪 German Bundespolizei. 🗣️"Bob was a total team player and a trusted member of the Transnational Security Studies Team, the College, and the GCMC. He was recognized as an expert in the field and his efforts will leave a lasting impact," said U.S. Marine Col. “Language shapes the way we think and determines what we can think about.” – Benjamin Lee Whorf 🌏 The #GCMC Partner Language Training Center (PLTCE) welcomes eight participants from Comoros, Moldova, Mongolia, Mozambique, Ukraine, and Yemen. This ELEC course runs from Oct. 29 to Dec. 2 and is a unique program personalized to each participant’s unique English language development. ✔️The five-week intensive course is tailored to prepare participants for the upcoming the Program on Terrorism and Security Studies (PTSS) set for early December. 🗣️ Our instructors at PLTCE personalize the language enhancement course to each participant’s individual English language development, helping familiarize them with terminology used in future security studies, strengthening presentation skills, and providing for a more comprehensive interpersonal dialogue. 🙌 The Marshall Center brought its A-game to the DSCU Security Cooperation Conference 2024! 🙌🌍 💬🤝Dr. Bernard Finel, Dean of #GCMC's College of International Security Studies, spoke on a panel titled “Promoting Integrated Deterrence: Matching Ambition and Practice.” He explored how we can build a strong foundation for success in both integrated deterrence and security cooperation efforts. 🧊🌐 Cmdr. Rachael Gosnell, a military faculty member in GCMC’s Strategic Security Studies Department, participated in a panel called “Understanding Allied and Partner Perspectives.” Her focus was on security cooperation in the high North, addressing some of the unique challenges and opportunities in the critical #Arctic region. 🗣️🌎 Andrea Gjorevski from GCMC’s Partner Language Training Center Europe shared insights on how PLTCE supports language interoperability among Allied and partner nations - an essential piece of successful #securitycooperation. 📘 The Marshall Center team showcased our work in building intellectual interoperability through education in security cooperation. 🎶PASS THE CULTURE 🎶 🥳One of the social highlights for the Program on Applied Security Studies took place this past weekend. The legendary Culture Night is when #PASS participants - this year more than 90 from 50 different countries - prepare traditional food and desserts to share with their colleagues, #GCMC faculty and staff, and the Friends of the Marshall Center members. The FOMC supports #PASS participants through several cultural immersion events over the duration of the nine-week course. 🇧🇦 Last week, #GCMC’s Dr. Benjamin Nickels and Dr. Sebastian von Münchow visited #Sarajevo to teach at the Euro Atlantic Security Course (EASC 2024) being held at the Peace Support Operations Training Centre, Bosnia and Herzegovina (PSOTC). The course provides an overall understanding of the #EuroAtlantic geopolitical context, including key actors and new threats, in particular with respect to security within the Euro-Atlantic region. 🏫The PSOTC is a renowned, certified peace-keeping training center run by the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Marshall Center supports the annual event alongside presenters from Geneva Centre for Security Policy, the Sarajevo-based international community, and regional scholars. 🗣️This year, Dr. Nickels spoke on “India and the Global South and Contemporary Security in the Euro-Atlantic Region", as well as “The Middle East and Africa and Contemporary Security in the Euro-Atlantic Region”. 🗣️ Dr. von Münchow gave a presentation on EU-NATO Cooperation. Additionally, Marshall Center Deputy Dean Professor Ralf Roloff provided a virtual lecture on “Euro-Atlantic Geopolitical Context and its 21st Century Security Implications”. 👨🎓The audience consisted of military representatives from Southeast Europe, #Turkey, and the United States, as well as political sciences and criminology students from Sarajevo University. ---- NATO | PSOTC

🇮🇹 CARABINIERI RECOGNITION 🇮🇹 🎖️ Col. Claudio Cappello, Italian Carabinieri, received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for his exemplary work at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies from January 2021 to September 2023. 🇮🇹 Colonel Cappello served as the Italian Armed Forces Chair at the Marshall Center, seconded to the center by the Ministero della Difesa as part of a unique and strong relationship with the Italian Armed Forces and the Arma dei Carabinieri in particular. 🗣️ "Col. Cappello was a dynamic, energetic faculty member and was responsible for center programs and events related to senior executives, countering transnational organized crime, terrorism, and security studies. It is unusual for foreign officers to receive such a significant U.S. award, but his work, effort, and ethic made Claudio a special member of the Marshall Center team." – US Army Col. Matt Neumeyer, Strategic Security Studies Department Head 🇮🇹 He is now serving as the Provost Marshall for the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps - Italy (NRDC-ITA) in #Milan.

Rachael Gosnell, Professor of Strategic Security Studies at the Marshall Center attended the Arctic Circle Assembly Oct. 17-19 in Reykjavik, Iceland. 🇮🇸 🗣️Commander Gosnell presented on a Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies -organized panel, 'Climate Security Dynamics in the Arctic: Building Understanding and Action'. Her remarks focused on the strategic impact of #climatechange on security, particularly examining the climate-security nexus. 🔵 The Arctic Circle Assembly is the largest annual international gathering on the #Arctic, attended by more than 2,000 participants from over 60 countries.
