GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH in Darmstadt, Germany, operates a unique large-scale accelerator for heavy ions. Researchers from around the world use this facility for experiments that help them make fascinating discoveries in basic research. In addition, they continually develop new and impressive applications. Currently the international accelerator facility FAIR, one of the largest research projects worldwide, is being built in Darmstadt, Germany. At FAIR, matter that usually only exists in the depth of space will be produced in a lab for research. Scientists from all over the world will be able to gain new insights into the structure of matter and the evolution of the universe from the Big Bang to the present. Many of them are students and PhD candidates. For them GSI offers special programs, e.g. the International Summer Student Program or scholarships at the Helmholtz Graduate School for Hadron and Ion Research (HGS-HIRe). This is the #antimatter experiment planned at #FAIR: It’s called #PANDA - Antiproton Annihilation at #Darmstadt. This detector: 🐘 weighs as much as 235 elephants: 700 tonnes; 🚛 is as long as a truck with a trailer and as tall as a two-story building: 18 metres long, 6 metres tall, and 6 metres wide; ✨ can measure 100 million particle tracks per second with a precision of 50 micrometers; ❄ contains a superconducting magnet that is cooled down to -269°C; 🧲 generates magnetic fields that could lift 480 tonnes of iron. With PANDA, scientists want to understand the strong force. It is the force that binds the elementary building blocks of matter, the quarks, into protons and neutrons, and then the protons and neutrons to nuclei. Despite its key role for the formation of matter, our understanding of the strong force is still far from complete. Using beams of antiprotons at PANDA, scientists want to create new particles that are predicted by theory but not yet observed. © GSI/FAIR, Zeitrausch
