We optimise the impact of MfN's Public Engagement through impact, culture change and co-creation research and practice.
Info
IETI is hosted by the Public Engagement & Impact unit of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (MfN), and aims to increase the quality and efficiency of the museum’s Public Engagement. This will contribute to its academic, societal, and environmental impact. IETI’s research and practice are divided into three work packages: - In Work Package 1, Concepts & Contexts, we will map relevant stakeholders, Public Engagement initiatives, and motivations or needs regarding Public Engagement. We will also co-define Public Engagement-related concepts and frameworks, as well as understand the interrelationships between them. - In Work Package 2, Impact Planning & Assessment, we will identify Public Engagement impact goals and indicators; co-create a Public Engagement impact model for the museum; and develop and implement impact research that evaluates the impact of the museum’s Public Engagement. - And finally, Work Package 3, Culture Change & Co-creation, focuses on enabling engagement and co-creation with external stakeholders, as well as rewarding and incentivizing Public Engagement. This will be done through impact & sustainability catered workshops; citizen assemblies and design-thinking activities; as well as Public Engagement institutional prizes and grants. By the end of the project, IETI will have generated: multiple results and lessons from research and practice; briefs on how to optimise the museum's impact; several impact and culture change initiatives; practice reports for Public Engagement practitioners and professionals; and research articles for the academic community. Write to us (ieti@mfn.berlin) if you would like to get in touch. IETI is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Funding duration: 2022-2025.

🚀 On 30.05.24, Zinaida Vasilyeva gave the talk "How to Study the #Impact of a #Museum: The Case of the MfN" as part of the FB3 #KnowledgeLab at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin. ✨ For the main points she covered and her key takeaways, read the post below. 👇
At the end of May, I had the chance to give my first talk , "How to Study the Impact of a Museum: The Case of the MfN," at the FB3 #KnowledgeLab at the #MuseumFürNaturkunde Berlin. My talk focused on three key points about #impact: 1️⃣ How do we think about the transformative a.k.a. political change in the museums? How do we imagine the future change? To what extent are we able to anticipate the path to this change? 2️⃣ What are the conceptual frameworks underlying the current participatory research practices and impact thinking? How are they applied in practice? I focused specifically on the #TheoryOfChange, but there are other tools, including #ParticipatoryActionResearch and #DesignThinking 3️⃣ The diversity of how different projects understand and practice participation, which is reflected in the scholarship, is often due to the discrepancy between the big goals of the projects and the technicalities and mechanics of evaluation techniques. Here are my personal takeaways 💡 💡 💡 : 💠 We need to further refine our analytical imagination and tools about impact as operating at the different levels: the level of activity, the level of institution, the level of society. 💠 We need more in-depth conversations between participation researchers and practitioners to better understand each other's languages, and to identify gaps, where research could highlight boundaries and barriers to productive collaboration and change. 💠 Importantly, this does not mean that we need to agree on methodologies or tools, but rather that we have a chance to develop a conceptual conversation about change. Thank you for the great discussion! Konstantin S. Kiprijanov, Christian Reichel, Sophie Ehrmanntraut, Sabrina Kirschke, Dr Ana I. Faustino, Mhairi Stewart, Victoria Shennan

🙌 Last week, Zinaida Vasilyeva attended the #ICOM Symposium 2024, in Friedrichshafen, focused on several topics related to the future of the #Museum world. Read her reflection below 👇 to learn more about the issues discussed and takeaways, also on the #Societal #Impact of museums. 💡
How political is museum work? This question was the main theme of the #ICOM Symposium 2024, which I attended last week in Friedrichshafen. For two and a half days, colleagues from various #museums in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland discussed pressing topics that evoke fears, doubts, and questions about the future of the museum world. ❔ ❓ ❔ What is the social mission of museums in times of political polarization? Do we have the means to avoid the instrumentalization of museums if/when dramatic political changes occur? What does it mean in practice for museums to be political yet independent? The issue of societal #impact plays a tricky role in this debate. Many colleagues from different museums and regions note the growing expectation from politicians for museums to solve social problems. In a way, the hard work that many museums have undertaken in recent decades to become more inclusive, participatory, and relevant to local communities means that museums are now framed as responsible for social cohesion, or the lack thereof. A few takeaways that continue to resonate with me: 🔸 International collaborations help resist local political pressures—network extensively! 🔹 Being bold helps, but boldness is relative and context-dependent: what works in a small, local museum might not be feasible in a national institution. 🔸 The most unexpected collaborations are possible if you are prepared to change as a team and an institution: be creative, be patient, and keep trying!
