Driving sustainability in aviation finance
Info
IMPACT is a growing group of 30 international banks and institutions that has taken the initiative to establish an independent association to promote sustainable aircraft financing. It intends to develop credible standards to eliminate box ticking and greenwashing, promote data transparency and provide an engine for change for the entire aircraft finance industry worldwide that is independent of vested interests. The Paris climate targets are rapidly finding their way into national legislation, and in the context of COP26 in Glasgow, IATA, ICAO, and other aviation bodies committed to Net Zero as a goal. Regulators, the public, science and research, investors and supervisory bodies are calling for strategies, transparency and focused measures. Driven by conviction and belief, IMPACT operates using the pro bono contributions of its members – so its organizational structure and membership fees are very lean. A group of around 30 distinguished financial institutions from around the world has already rallied behind the idea of IMPACT and the group is growing. What are you doing to decarbonise? ✈️ We’re just back from the Ishka: Aviation Finance Financing Sustainable Aviation conference in London—a full day of insightful discussions on the levers, challenges, and opportunities of financing aviation’s decarbonisation. While sustainability fatigue has been growing in the industry, it was encouraging to see a deepened understanding of decarbonisation technologies in #aviation finance and experiencing the continued commitment of various industry players to decarbonisation. This is crucial—not just for meaningful discussions but for taking real action. Moderated by Sean MacHale (EY), IMPACT on sustainable aviation’s President Dr. Ulrike Ziegler 🇺🇦 joined Alison OConnor (Avolon), Jonathon Counsell (International Airlines Group (IAG)), Jasna Šelih (UN Principles for Responsible Investment), and Gaynor Hartnell (Renewable Transport Fuel Association) to discuss the role of various stakeholders on "What are you doing to decarbonise?" ⚠️ Net Zero by 2050 is an imperative—public and investor scrutiny is rising. Aviation must demonstrate credible #decarbonisation pathways, not just aspirations. 💵 Aviation #finance plays a pivotal role—green bonds, sustainability-linked loans, and SAF investments are key. Lessors must accelerate fleet modernization, and financial players must work with regulators to build credible sustainability-linked #investment frameworks. 🤝 Commitments to #SAF by airlines/airline groups like IAG through meaningful, long-term offtake contracts send important signals to producers, investors, financiers and are the basic prerequisite for financial viability 🛫 Airlines depicting progess in #decarbonization can potentially benefit from preferential finance terms and can translate such strategy into a competitive advantage. 📊 Long-term investors like pension funds must consider the interests of beneficiaries several years if not decades into the future; therefore #climate-related risk are part of their analysis. 🌎 Policy support is essential—SAF remains expensive, and stronger global alignment on #sustainability policies (e.g., #CORSIA) is urgently needed. 🔎 Transparency & accountability matter—standardized #ESG metrics will differentiate real action from offset-heavy approaches. IN ANY CASE: Inaction is likely to result in higher financing costs, regulatory penalties, and capital flight as institutional investors move away from high-carbon industries. What are the next steps? ➡️ Financing mechanisms must evolve to support greener technologies ➡️ Governments need to provide stable regulatory frameworks & incentives ➡️ Transparent reporting will be critical for securing capital and consumer trust Aviation must embrace this critical transformation — sustainability will become a strategic advantage and is more than just a compliance exercise! A big thank you to the Ishka team for an outstanding conference! 👏 #aviationsustainability #sustainablefinance #netzero #aircraftleasing

"What are you doing to decarbonize aviation?". A fair question, which is more relevant than ever, even more so as - in my personal opinion - our industry is suffering from ESG fatigue. Don't we all know the feeling of putting something off when the task is very difficult? Over the past weeks, there has been increasing news that some of the supporters of the decarbonisation of our industry appear to be reducing their support. This comes at a particularly critical time. This should and must not be a shop stopper - on the contrary, it must motivate us all the more. Isn't it a great feeling at the end of the day to have made a significant contribution to the solution? And: the management of ESG risks continues to be very important in the financial sector and for investors who are putting their money into aircraft and the aviation industry. I look forward to exchanging views with Jasna Šelih, Jonathon Counsell, Gaynor Hartnell, Alison OConnor on the above question moderated by Sean MacHale at the Ishka: Aviation Finance event on March 26th, 2025 in London. Don't miss our talk at 9.30am. IMPACT on sustainable aviation Jean Chedeville Hugo Kanters Anna Münch Jörg Schirrmacher Bryson P. 🌎 Global Policy Perspectives on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) at the IMPACT Forum 🌍 🛬 At our IMPACT Forum, held on December 2, 2024, at WTW in London, Jörg Schirrmacher, Board member at IMPACT on sustainable aviation and Director Transport Finance at Helaba, interviewed Damien Meadows (European Commission/DG Climate Action), Alex Philpott (Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom) and Jim Spaeth (U.S. Department of Energy (DOE))*. Their conversation explored different approaches taken by the U.S., UK, and EU in scaling #SAF and advancing global #cooperation. Here are some key insights from the discussion: 🔹 Diverse Policy Approaches, Shared Learning The U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (#IRA) provides financial incentives for SAF, while the EU blends mandates with financial support for both production and consumption. Meanwhile, the UK’s Jet Zero Taskforce is driving collaboration across industry and government to reach Net Zero #aviation. Despite differences, all three regions are actively exchanging best practices to refine policies and accelerate SAF deployment. 🔹 Industry Feedback & Next Steps The U.S. has seen enthusiastic industry response to SAF tax credits, with further policy clarity expected in 2025. The EU is reviewing support mechanisms to ensure emerging SAF technologies receive adequate backing. The UK has legislated a 10% SAF mandate by 2030 and is introducing a revenue certainty mechanism to provide greater investment confidence. 🔹 International Cooperation is Key All three policymakers emphasized the need for global collaboration to scale SAF and aviation #decarbonization. Initiatives like International Civil Aviation Organization’s CORSIA program, the Clean Energy Ministerial, and the Global Biofuels Alliance are important platforms for knowledge-sharing. The UK is providing funding to support SAF development in Africa, underscoring the need to make the transition inclusive and accessible worldwide. 🎥 Watch the full discussion to gain deeper insights into how policy is shaping the future of sustainable aviation: https://lnkd.in/d5CKm77w A huge thank you to our esteemed speakers for their contributions! Dr. Ulrike Ziegler 🇺🇦, President of the Board of Directors, IMPACT on sustainable aviation, will be speaking on the panel: What are you doing to decarbonise aviation? at Ishka Financing Sustainable Aviation on 26 March 2025, Hilton London Tower Bridge. What does 2025 hold in store for you? UZ: We are working on a sustainable finance framework and our Practitioner's Guide—implementation guidelines—to the impact Milestone Concept. Our methodology ties in nicely with stakeholders' (regulators, airlines, lessors et al.) efforts and expectations to keep reporting to a minimum, focusing on meaningful KPIs that reduce, if not eliminate, the risk of greenwashing claims. Who are you most looking forward to hearing from at Ishka Financing Sustainable Aviation and why? UZ: I am particularly interested in understanding whether we will see more appetite from investors and financiers to support decarbonization technologies despite gaps in supporting policies. While many people demand policy improvements, it will take at least 2-3 years to get policies revised; however, we must make funding available today. How can we bridge the gap? I am most looking forward to hearing from Jan Toschka on SAF producer alliances to meet demand and create opportunities, particularly how it can help fill the gap between demand and supply. My personal sustainability goal for 2025 UZ: Buying locally and avoiding (to the extent possible) wrapped produce. Join the discussion at Ishka Financing Sustainable Aviation as we take stock and move needles in the drive towards a sustainable future for aviation. We had the pleasure of hearing from Lorraine McCann (ESG Reporting Lead, KPMG Ireland) on the European Commission’s omnibus package and its impact on aircraft #lessors. While this remains a proposal—not yet approved by the EU Council or EU Parliament—the industry’s message to regulators was clear: reduce the reporting burden to maintain #competitiveness. The result? A significant scale-back of #ESG reporting requirements under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (#CSRD): The definition of "large" companies has changed: Only those with >1,000 employees (previously >250), AND either >€50M turnover, or >€25M in assets, will be required to report to the CSRD. This means 80% of the originally scoped-in companies (~50,000 businesses) may be exempt from CSRD compliance. Key Adjustments in the Omnibus Proposal: ⏳ More time to prepare – Two additional years for CSRD compliance, plus one extra year for CS3D. 📚 Reduced reporting burden – Fewer mandatory data points, a shift toward quantitative metrics, and elimination of sector-specific standards initially set for 2026. ⛓️Limited value chain reporting – Only tier 1 suppliers are included, avoiding excessive trickle-down effects on SMEs. 📝 Voluntary SME reporting framework introduced – A new, simplified sustainability standard for businesses outside CSRD scope. 🫵 Should You Consider Voluntary Reporting? Even if your organization is no longer required to report under CSRD, voluntary disclosure under the VSME Standard would be a strategic move. Lorraine highlighted three key reasons: 1️⃣ Meeting increasing #sustainability data demands from business customers, suppliers, or finance providers 2️⃣ Strengthening resilience by both mitigating ESG-related risks, whilst delivering on strategic sustainability objectives 3️⃣ Improving brand, reputation and differentiating through #transparency What’s Next? While the omnibus package is still a proposal, organizations should assess their #reporting pathway now. Whether reporting is mandatory or voluntary, staying ahead of regulatory developments will be crucial in the coming months. Is your company impacted by the proposed changes? Are you considering voluntary reporting? Let’s discuss in the comments! 👇 #omnibus #sustainableaviation #aviationfinance #aircraftfinance #esgreporting #aircraftleasing #sustainableinvestment #sustainabilityreporting #saf #carboncapture #decarbonization #netzero #competitivecompass #eu Dr. Ulrike Ziegler 🇺🇦 Jörg Schirrmacher Michael Rurik Halaby, FRAeS Hugo Kanters Jean Chedeville Bryson P. ✈️ Beyond CO₂: Are We Overlooking Aviation’s True Climate Impact? At the IMPACT Forum 2024 in London, Prof. Piers Forster, Professor of Physical Climate Change and founding Director of the Priestley Centre for Climate Futures at the University of Leeds, shared eye-opening insights on the effects of aviation on clouds and climate. ☁️ Contrails and aviation-induced clouds are contributing extensively to the impact on #climate change from flying—yet their impacts remain poorly understood. Here are some key takeaways 💡 🔹 Small shifts in flight altitude could help reduce #contrails, but large-scale trials are needed. 🔹 Properly understanding and addressing non-CO₂ effects could be a game changer in aviation’s climate strategy. 🔹 More research, collaboration, and bold action are essential to ensure the industry moves toward a truly #sustainable future. 📽️ Watch the full video of Prof Piers Forsters' keynote here: https://lnkd.in/dAikbhhr 🫵 What are your thoughts on tackling aviation’s non-CO₂ climate effects? #aviation #sustainableaviation #aviationfinance #climatechange #decarbonisation #netzero #CO2 #contrails #emissions #aircraftfinance #sustainability #decarbonization WTW Dr. Ulrike Ziegler 🇺🇦 Jörg Schirrmacher Bryson P. 🛬 On our latest impact Members’ call, we had the pleasure of hosting Katrin Sievert from ETH Zürich, who shared her research on "Projecting Future Costs of Direct Air Capture (DAC) and Its Impact on Aviation." Carbon removal technology faces a significant innovation and policy gap, and DAC is no exception. Rather than being a single technology, #DAC encompasses multiple approaches, each with its own components, cost structures, and deployment challenges. All pathways to limiting global warming to well below 1.5-2°C depend on carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) - and DAC plays a critical role, particularly in addressing hard-to-abate emissions, such as in #aviation. DAC could contribute to aviation’s #decarbonization in two key ways: 1️⃣ Removing CO₂ from the atmosphere 2️⃣ Enabling the production of synthetic fuels to replace fossil-based aviation fuels Beyond #CO₂, DAC-based fuels can also help mitigate non-CO₂ climate effects, such as #contrails, amplifying their impact. However, the high cost remain a major challenge. Reducing the costs of DAC and moving down the learning curve requires strong policy support, #investment, and innovation. Key takeaways from the discussion: 💰 Cost Projections & Learning Curves ▪️Scaling up technologies has historically driven cost reductions - DAC is expected to follow a similar trend, albeit with lower learning rates than for other renewables such as #solar PV. ▪️However, cost projections vary significantly, highlighting the need for more targeted research. 📊 Funding & Market Dynamics ▪️Today, funding comes from voluntary markets, corporate commitments, and public incentives. ▪️Looking ahead, carbon markets could play a key role in scaling DAC by integrating it into compliance mechanisms. 🪜 Next Steps: Scaling & Policy ▪️Public and private sector collaboration is essential to accelerating DAC deployment. ▪️Success will depend on cost competitiveness, regulatory frameworks, and integration into carbon markets. The conversation reinforced a crucial point: 📌 DAC is not a silver bullet but potentially an essential tool for decarbonizing aviation and beyond. A huge thank you to Katrin Sievert for her insightful research and to the impact members for joining the discussion! #sustainbleaviation #aviationfinance #aircraftfinance #aircraftleasing #sustainableinvestment #carbonremoval #DirectAirCapture #emissions #sustainability #decarbonisation #netzero Dr. Ulrike Ziegler 🇺🇦 Hugo Kanters Jean Chedeville Jörg Schirrmacher Bryson P.
