#eSAF production is reaching new efficiencies! 🚀 As part of the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung-funded Kopernikus project P2X, Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) and Sunfire have successfully coupled co-electrolysis with an INERATEC fuel synthesis plant. What’s special about this? Coupling the two processes increases the efficiency of the overall Power-to-Liquid process at demonstration scale.  The co-electrolysis process turns steam and CO2 into synthesis gas in a single-step electrochemical reaction. In the INERATEC plant this is converted into synthetic hydrocrabons – or: e-Fuels.  💡 Within the Kopernikus project's third and final funding phase, INERATEC will target the large-scale e-SAF production with a pioneer plant in Frankfurt, Germany.  Read into the details via the links in the comments. #NextEra

A big day for our partnership with the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst at the #EIBforum in Luxembourg. Yesterday we formally signed the funding commitment of up to €70m, paving the way for the operation of our pioneering #eFuels plant. The message of the event: Dynamic public-private partnerships, excellent clean technology and a strong commitment to the Paris climate goals are now more important than ever to secure a leading position for Europe.      It is a powerful validation of our vision of a fossil-free future. Europe **is** an attractive investment destination for clean tech: now more than ever 💪 Only days after the launch of the Clean Industrial Deal #cid - and as I'm gearing up for this year's European Investment Bank (EIB) Forum which gets underway in Luxembourg on Wednesday - I want to share that Breakthrough Energy recently made two investments in Europe:   🇩🇪 Germany-based 🚀 INERATEC is building the largest synthetic fuels production facility in Europe, where it transforms biogenic CO2 and clean hydrogen into synthetic fuels and chemicals. This innovative technology has the potential to decarbonize some of our hardest-to-abate sectors like aviation, and to increase energy security in Europe by replacing fossil imports with domestically produced clean fuels. Now, INERATEC is taking a major step forward toward commercialization. With a new €70 million funding commitment from our EU Catalyst Partnership, INERATEC will open its carbon neutral e-fuel production plant in Frankfurt later this year. The plant will produce up to 2,500 tons of e-fuels and e-chemicals, including sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). The ✈️ sustainable aviation sector is already primed for growth, driven by supportive regulation. Now INERATEC can do its part to ensure we have the sustainable fuels necessary to meet that growing demand. 🇫🇷 Another European company, France-based 🌍Mantle8, is making important advances with natural hydrogen, a cost-efficient energy solution for hard-to-decarbonize sectors like steel and synthetic fuels. Using 🔍 #ai-powered mapping, subsurface imaging, and gas composition analysis, Mantle8 can detect natural hydrogen with world-first accuracy. This accuracy cuts project development time in half, lowering natural hydrogen production costs to just $0.80/kg, a price point that could revolutionize the clean energy market, significantly reducing the green premiums of all hydrogen derivatives, like green fertilizers or the synthetic fuels Ineratec produces. Breakthrough Energy Ventures, in partnership with Kiko Ventures, recently invested €3.4 million in Mantle8, to support the company’s technological pilot—an essential step toward commercialization. As Mantle8 advances its work, geologic hydrogen discovery is going to become more accurate, more affordable, and more profitable. 👉 Bottom line: Europe offers exciting opportunities in #cleantech #innovation. The challenge is - and remains - scaling in a needlessly fragmented market, lack of growth capital, artificially distinct policies for 'industry' and 'startups' and a public sector that too often operates far from the tech frontier.
