Ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy experiments for educational laboratories. A team from the Department of Physics at Harvard University recently reported on an ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy experiment for undergraduate educational laboratories. The experiment aimed to introduce students to the important insights of ultrafast techniques for the physics of solids. The team used our ELMO HP – our compact, high-power femtosecond fiber laser – to build a table-top setup suitable to coherently excite (“pump”) phonons in crystals, and to measure (“probe”) transient reflectivity changes arising due to the pump. The results show that our ELMO platform is an ideal tool for educational laboratories! #Spectroscopy #PumpProbe #FiberLaser #Education https://lnkd.in/gjg2ZUzc [First image from paper: Nicholas J. Exhibiting this week: HRMS and IRMMW-THz. This week we are superposed between Bologna, Italy, and Perth, Australia! Join Anna Horoschenkoff and Luca Semeria at the 27th International Conference on High Resolution Molecular Spectroscopy (HRMS) in Bologna, which brings together spectroscopists from around the world. On the other side of the world, Milan Öri and Prince Bawuah (PhD) are in Perth at the 49th International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz Waves (IRMMW-THz), where we are proud to be Gold Sponsors. Looking for enabling technologies for your spectroscopy applications? Both teams will be around all week to help you find a solution. #HRMS #IRMMW_THz #Spectroscopy #THz #Photonics https://lnkd.in/eSxsFc5r https://lnkd.in/ePu_QmBV

Terahertz spectroscopy for non-invasive monitoring of plant health. Analysis of plant leaf samples can be challenging due to high water content and non-uniform plant fiber distribution, resulting in difficulties in identifying plant diseases. Researchers from A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research, the Institution of Sustainability for Chemical, Energy, and Environment, and Nanyang Technological University Singapore have developed a new technique that uses graphene oxide thin film sensors for plasmonic enhancement. The team used our TERA K15 all fiber-coupled terahertz spectrometer in their experiments, and were able to significantly improve detection signal-to-noise ratio and sensitivity of measurements, enabling them to successfully detect two different plant leaf diseases. Their findings show the promise of terahertz sensing not only for agricultural monitoring, but for non-invasive sensing applications in general. To hear more about our terahertz solutions for your research, talk to Milan Öri and Prince Bawuah (PhD) at IRMMW next week in Perth, Australia! https://lnkd.in/e3uQWU9v https://lnkd.in/eM3-u29t [Two images from Wag, X. et al, “Non-invasive early monitoring plant health using terahertz spectroscopy,” J. Rapid examination of kidney tumors using nonlinear microscopy. Researchers from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology recently reported on the rapid examination of kidney tumors using nonlinear microscopy (NLM), a fluorescence microscopy technique that has the ability to rapidly image tissue in a way that resembles standard hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) histology. The team used Menlo Systems' YLMO compact femtosecond fiber laser operating at 1040 nm for 2-photon excitation of fluorophores, generating images at video rate with a high degree of correspondence with H&E staining. These results show clinical benefits of using NLM for the rapid diagnosis of renal cancer, and that our robust, reliable and compact femtosecond fiber laser at 1040 nm is a perfect fit for multiphoton microscopy! https://lnkd.in/ePQdi6kW #MultiPhotonMicroscopy #NonlinearMicroscopy #FiberLaser #CancerDiagnosis [First image is from Yaileen D. Frequency combs: in a museum? In June of this year, the Deutsches Museum, in collaboration with the Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology, opened a new exhibition: "Light and Matter." Our Managing Director and co-founder, Michael Mei, participated in a podium discussion moderated by Ralph Caspers, and alongside Prof. Dr. Barbara Kraus, Prof. Dr. Monika Aidelsburger, Prof. Dr. Immanuel Bloch, and Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Wolfgang M. Heckl on "The future of quantum technologies." We were excited to see an optical frequency comb on display in the exhibition, including our components! The exhibition, which runs until the end of 2025, provides fantastic insights into light and its interaction with matter (and vice versa), as well as quantum optics. #DeutschesMuseum #LightAndMatter #LichtUndMaterie #QuantumOptics #FrequencyComb https://lnkd.in/emZq_epc

Happy International Cat Day: Avoiding the temptation to make a Schrödinger’s cat joke… In the fields of quantum science and technology, the temptation to celebrate International Cat Day with Schrödinger’s cat jokes is strong. This year, we will not give in to temptation, but instead will just share some pictures of Menlo office cats. Enjoy! #InternationalCatDay
