AppFlowy has a huge potential to become the No. 1 open source alternative to Notion. Before I commit myself to a new tool, I make sure it meets certain requirements. One »must have« is a solid API and an integration for n8n. AppFlowy's public REST API just got published recently, so I decided to create an n8n node for it. 𝐈 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐧8𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐭! By now, it may seem like everyone and their dog has had a go at replicating OpenAI’s Deep Research (https://lnkd.in/eH6ZFWXg), but those on OpenAI’s pro subscription claim they’re all nothing compared to the real thing. That may or may not be so but by building even a watered-down version of Deep Research, I’ve gained something valued much more than $200/month; critical insights into building advanced knowledge-based AI workflows. My bootleg version of Deep Research could be more accurately described as “AI Q&A with multi-step search” and it’s using OpenAI’s o3-mini, Apify for web search and Notion for storing reports. I also happened to build it over the course of a weekend using my favourite low-code tool, n8n, so yeah, like I said no regrets! The value gained from building this capability far outweighs the time and cost. And of course, compared to OpenAI and Perplexity, my version may not be as refined or as fast but it’s good to know I won’t need to keep a constant eye on my number of requests or monthly bill. What’s more, with the ability to modify the n8n template with ease, it could be argued it’s slightly better than even open code-based solutions for non/semi-technical folks! (👋 huggingface!) Why would you need to modify it? Well, for one, I’ve been experimenting with swapping out the default recursive web search for recursive Youtube search instead. Yes, that means I’ve made a Youtube Deep Researcher which can build reports off the latest videos and transcripts (See same public Notion page for examples). Front-end was built in StackBlitz bolt.diy, backend runs on n8n, Ollama or Anthropic models for inference, and Unipile for LinkedIn API (because unless your surname is "Gates" you're not getting official API access). Plus all hosted on Oumnya's CloudStation. So much tweakability. Think this will be great for C-suite, influencers, recruiters. Everyone receiving inbound messages en masse. The goal is not to put your sacred inbox on autoreply. Instead, weave AI gracefully into the process to speed you up whilst retaining your human touch. n8n has definitely less apps integrations than Make, but their HTTP request node is quite neat. No need to click buttons and insert different request parameters. Just copy the cURL from the API documentation and paste it into the HTTP Request node. And all the parameters auto populate. It's a small thing, but it makes the process of making an API call faster, easier if you are not super familiar with HTTP requests and reduces errors when copying API request details.

I used to use GummySearch to manually identify potential sidehustles from Reddit posts. That's why Zubair's agentic workflow that does this automatically got my attention. His relatively simple n8n flow monitors Reddit for the top X hottest posts in /r/smallbusiness/ for a given keyword. Then with the power of AI, he gets new business opportunities delivered to his inbox or Slack. Indie hackers use this "Discovery via Reddit" pattern all the time to find already validated business ideas. Again, I myself used to do this totally manually. AI tooling is making it easier and easier for someone to run a sidehustle (or a not so sidehustle) - be it in building the actual MVP, or automating backoffice. It's also making a ton of possible problem:solution pairs viable. The "small potatoes" problems that VC-backed endeavours could never touch. But these "small potatoes" problems can be big enough for an indie hacker, soloentrepreneur, or bootstrapped team. And that's exactly why I wanted to share this interview. Zubair shows how in ~1 hour you could set up your own pipeline to get inspiration on that next big thing. If you focus on a niche that you're already in, you're already in a way better position than some PM from a company looking to create value for your role. Invest a few hours here and there in 2025. Build something useful. Then share it. And hell, earn some chedda whilst doing it.
