#ThoughtTuesday Copilot from Microsoft is an amazing tool and some times having conversation with the Copilot gives you a feeling of talking to a semi-expert in a specific field. So today I asked Copilot "What are the challenges faced in designing a software programming language that is machine readable and human readable while describing the manufacturing processes, that way all the manual processes in manufacturing can be digitized and worker guidance and training can be automated and controlled by AI" And it answered with the following: Designing a software programming language that is both machine-readable and human-readable for manufacturing processes involves several challenges: 1. Complexity and Integration Challenge: In manual manufacturing environments, integrating diverse systems is highly complex. Each manual process might involve different tools, methods, and protocols. Creating a unified language that can standardize instructions while accommodating the unique requirements of each tool and process is challenging. The language must be versatile enough to handle various tasks and ensure seamless communication between different components of the manufacturing process. 2. Real-Time Requirements Challenge: Manual manufacturing processes often require real-time responses. The language must be capable of processing data and providing feedback instantly to ensure smooth operations. The language needs to support real-time data processing and control, enabling immediate responses to changes or issues that arise during the manufacturing process. 3. Scalability and Flexibility Challenge: The language must be scalable to accommodate different sizes of manufacturing setups, from small workshops to large factories. It should be flexible enough to adapt to various manufacturing processes and changes over time. As businesses grow or change their production methods, the language should be able to scale up or down and adjust to new requirements without needing a complete overhaul. 4. Here's the harsh truth about Smart Manufacturing that nobody talks about: It’s not just about technology; it’s about culture. We all believe that automation, IoT, robotics etc etc can revolutionize production, but we’ve found that many companies struggle because they dive straight in to the sexy technology but overlook the human element. And in low volume, high mix SME environments the human element is vital, and will remain so. Staff may dig in their heels and try to break change, fearing job loss or being overwhelmed by new systems. Additionally, the transformation demands a whole load of investment in time and cash, not only to obtain the tech but to upskill staff and redefine processes. Without a clear strategy, leadership buy-in, and a focus on people, even the most technically brilliant smart manufacturing initiatives can fail to deliver the expected results.
